What type of fluid does a 1994 Taurus AXOD tranny call for?
Thanks in advance.

The 1994 used Ford's Type F. You can use Mercon or Mercon IV in the transaxle. If you change all the fluid, you can use Mercon V. So Type F will work just fine.

Will DEX/MERC work OK?

Will the mixture of the old Type F and the DEX/MERC cause problems?

Should not be of any concern. Mercon V can be used in place of Type F or Mercon, but you can not use Type F or Mercon in a transmission designed for Mercon V.

Thanks for the replies all. If I wanted to change all of the fluid is that something I can do at home or will I need to take it to a shop that offers a transmission flush? The reason I'm thinking of doing so, is that I was having a problem with some rough shifting previous to changing out 6 QTS. Right after I changed the filter and 6 qts of fluid it was shifting beautifully. The next day when I drove it it was back to shifting hard again. I was thinking maybe a full "flush" would alleviate the problem? Any other ideas would be welcome. I'm hoping this isn't another "known bad transmission" issue I've heard about on these cars.
Thanks in advance.

did you take magnet and run threw your old tranny fluid to see how many metal shavings was in there? if not go to a well known shop to get it flushed if your going that way.

The Mercon V I've used, Castrol, claims on the bottle that it stops shift "shudders".

Scrapper, I didn't run the magnet through the oil that I removed, but the magnet was coated with about a 1/16th or 1/8th inches of shavings.

If those were fine particles, almost like a sludge, rather than "shavings" that is not abnormal, especially if the fluids rarely changed or if the magnet wasn't cleaned during past services.
