looking to get a truck...need adviceRed Tipps 08-18-2008, 03:37 AM Alright guys. Ive been in the truck market for a while now and have narrowed my search and have found the one I want. My problem is I have a car that I am trying to sell(still owe) before I get the truck. Ive been debating purchasing the truck and making double payments untill the car is sold...just not sure if I can swing it. My questions for you all truck owners is this: The truck I am looking at is an 05' Silverado 1500 LT. 45k, leather, bose, extended cab, matching hard tonneau cover, with 20" wheels and brand new tires. They were originally asking 18,950, recently dropped to 17,950. I recently found another truck with the same trims minus the aftermarket wheels with less miles for 16,950 that I will see if they can match. IS this a good price for a truck? The body is in great shape and looks very well taken care of. Second question: Is it worth if they will give me a trade to roll over the loan to the truck? Ide rather sell it out right but dont want to risk the truck being gone. I know its not a truck market right now but ide really hate to see it gone. One of those vehicles I get excited about everytime I go see it. Third question: I currently have an 03 grand prix GTP(supercharged) I am getting killed on insurance(have previous tickets, not with this car):banghead: but would a truck be any cheaper? I just recently turned 21 and have got mixed answers from different insurance companies when I have requested a quote. Is there an insurance company that has good rates for trucks? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to do all my homework and not get upside down on my finances. Thanks for any help j cAT 08-18-2008, 10:11 AM the truck purchase should be separate from your current vehicle...trading in will cost you....If your car is really clean and cared for you will find a buyer.. with gas prices climbing I guess you are in need of a truck to conduct your business.../work....with your stated economic condition you should not purchase this truck if you THINK that your gonna save money... Insurance is slightly less than a high risk vehicle but not much,as your poor driving record will increase the cost of ownership.. with any used vehicle purchase it is important to get a report that shows the vehicle history..../problems/accidents of record...costs 25.oo... good luck Red Tipps 08-18-2008, 02:39 PM I understand gas milage will decrease quite a bit but during the week I only drive back and forth to work about 10 miles each way. The only realy killer will get me when I go home for the holidays(7 hour drive). I have to run premium in my current car for the supercharger, granted it gets good milage but it gets expensive. Ive done some figuring and with my car payment, car insurance I would be coming out ahead if not breaking even believe it or not if I can find a good insurance rate...I know thats hard to believe. I pay 204 p/month for my car if it means anything:frown: and the monthy payment for this truck will be just over what I pay now. I have some toys that I have to depend on a friend to haul around whenever I want to go anywhere(quad, motorcycle). Gets annoying having to rely on someone. and I really dont want to put a trailer on my car, Just impractical to have a car when you have things like that. Ive wanted a truck since college but bought this car in a rush because I needed a car before I headed down here for my current job. I will sell my car out right. I can sell it now for the amount I still owe so I would be breaking even. Really not worth rolling it onto the truck loan and pay gobs per month for the truck when it wasnt worth that much in the first place. Thanks for the advice j cAT ukrkoz 08-18-2008, 05:28 PM well, here's my 2 cents: (and i'll be blunt, as someone has to tell you the truth) 1. you don't need a truck. you need a reliable honda with trailer that will pull your toys - and accord will do just fine. 2. less toys = less debt 3. you ever looked into this: http://seattle.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=2005+silverado&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max i know it's for seattle, but i have no doubt it's same or better in your area. 4. i'll play, what's her face, that female financial advisor on tv, and tell you this: boyfriend, you CAN'T EFFORD buying anything right now, esp another expensive - and very costly to maintaine in the future - toy. trucks are for blue collar crowd, laborers and workers, haulers and towers. you don't need one. country will be well in 5 bucks a gallon next year, what you gonna do then? 5. insurance wise - well, tough.... in general, the best way to get best deal around is to go through major membership at like wallmart/costco/sam's. they have special services for their members and get good discount. that's with clean record, of course. sorry for being brutally honest, but i am simply saving you a lot of financial mess, and $$ down the road. don't do it. you are a honda civic profile right now. 4x4 blazerguy 08-20-2008, 01:12 AM I also want to update my truck. But unlike you I have cash & a good driving record. But I'm not jumping at anything right now. With truck sales in the toilet & things not showing signs of improving anytime soon. I'm sitting tight right now. I believe there will be better deals coming in the not to far off future. I suggest you double up on your present car note & save, save, & save. Don't get yourself too deep into debt at 21 years old. Learn to pay cash for things. Then insurance is much cheaper. We have 3 trucks/car & 2 newer motorcycles, a Ninja & a SV & our insurance for all of them is under a grand a year. Just my two cents worth. j cAT 08-20-2008, 09:12 AM I also want to update my truck. Just my two cents worth. you are so correct ....young people get into the credit trap then can't get out... when I was young a long time ago we had some bad times and I saved ..payed cash for vehicles and carried only the minimum vehicle insurance...I saved a large amount of money.... now I can say I don't have to work and I own all my property....plan for the future ...spend you money with care...
