I have a 98 accord ex 4 cylinder auto transmission with 196,000 miles. It is starting to have a problem with the transmission shift lever. With the transmission in park, I can mash the brake pedal but the button on the lever doesn't go in to release the lever into any gear. So far I've been able to pump the brake pedal a few times and it will release. It's got plenty of brake fluid, and it has a SHIFT LOCK RELEASE that I can push a key into and that works. The transmission has plenty of fluid and it works fine once it is in gear. Please advise on what you think the problem might be. Thanks

There is a solenoid in the console that operates the detent for the shift selector...when you press the brake, the solenoid pushes the lock mechanism outta the way.

If you don't hear the little click from the detent solenoid each time you press the brake when in park with motor running, the solenoid is dying or cruddy and sticking.

Lotta console shifter problems come from having stuff spilled in them...

Also a faulty brake light switch can cause this....make sure the brake lights are working each time you hit the brakes or this could be your problem...

Thanks so much. The brake lights are working ok so I'm going to go into the console in the morning and look for the solenoid. What you're saying makes sense so I'm about positive you're right. Again, thanks a lot.
