98 windstar trans go boom!Rodeohell 08-12-2008, 09:51 PM I was driving 45 MPH when all of a sudden the trans axle made a real bad sound and the van come to a stop and would not move anymore......Could not push...like it was in park. The shift lever works but there no trans engaging. Do gears break in these thing? No engine lights or noise when running.. Any thoughts??? Mike northern piper 08-13-2008, 07:55 AM sorry Mike, this doesn't sound good. Not knowing anything about your tranny health you're going to have to have it towed to a reputable shop (which may not be Ford) and have them look at it. Piper Rodeohell 09-29-2008, 08:49 PM So I Find out that the windstar was made by the devil himself to torture any poor soul who dares try and replace the transmission. Evil nasty job...only thing worst is replacing the 3 rear plugs and wires. Now in Windstar hell. :banghead: 12Ounce 09-29-2008, 09:28 PM It is a major job ... but doable. Just gotta go slow! ... and we usually don't have that kind of time. tomj76 09-30-2008, 07:11 PM You may be in the market for a rebuilt transmission. In mine, I believe the differential pinion came out and broke through the housing. I had no choice but to do a complete replacment. Just be happy that it happened "at home". When it happened to me, I was 300 mi from home. The replacement needed rebuilt within 6 months... vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
