1999 accord axle seal leaking in transray zielinski 08-10-2008, 11:00 PM Recently my car was at the dealer and we mentioned a trans leak, dealer said it was axle seals in trans. They replaced them, short time later car went back to dealer for service and I was told that axle seal was leaking. At that time they checked it out and said I would need a transmission.Trans works fine never had a problem with.Is this common and what needs to be done to repair.Or how much will a transmission cost. thanks Mr.Leaky:mad: jeffcoslacker 08-10-2008, 11:53 PM Well at worst you shouldn't need a tranny, a good tranny guy can pull the diff apart and replace what's bad. Dealers don't fix things, they replace them. More cost effective. Sure they weren't just looking at residual mess from the original problem? Ever leak on the ground where you park? I've seen a lot of them that are real messy around the shafts...never seems to really be a problem, unless it's pouring out. This a stick or auto? ray zielinski 08-11-2008, 10:38 AM Thanks for the reply,The car is a auto and has about 120k miles on it.And it leaks enough that we are having to add fluid. It does leave a mess when parked.Does the trans need to come out to take differentail apart? Its surprising to have this leak more all of a sudden the car has been little or no trouble.Honda has done all the scheduled maint. thanks jeffcoslacker 08-11-2008, 03:06 PM The differential case is integral to the tranny, so if it has to be done from inside then yeah, the whole thing has to come out...that's not my department though, can't say for sure... I'd call around some import tranny shops and see what you can find out about it, they can tell you more. For instance my wife creamed a large object on the highway last winter with my '95 LX and it tore a big piece of the tranny casting out, so the flywheel was exposed, etc, but not leaking fluid and still working fine... I was thinking of replacing it just to be sure, but I found a shop here that the guy is a Honda whiz, and he put the whole guts of mine in a good shell for $350...labor and all...couldn't pass that up...he also had a used one w/120,000 (mine has 185,000) for $600 total cost... That is puzzling why it went that bad that soon...did you even have other work done involving the axles, or an accident, etc? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
