97 lumina turn signal switch

Hey, this is my first post here. I hope to learn a lot from reading the forums here.
Anyway, I just got my first car, a 1997 Lumina for free. It is in pretty good condition except the turn signal switch is messed up. The previous owner lived with it, but I don't think I can. The problem is that when I go to turn, I have to hold the swith at the point just before it clicks. That means I only have one hand to turn and if I move my hands just a little, the signal turns off and that could be dangerous. I googled my problem and found that it could be the "flasher" or the switch itself. Has anyone had this problem? If so did you fix it, and how much did it cost?

Thanks

Check and see if the outboard brake lights are working...if not, multi-switch for sure. the circuit for them is run through the T/S multi-switch. It's a real common part to fail. Usually the brake lights quit working at the same time the T/S's start acting weird.

The high mount brake light is on a separate circuit and will work regardless.
