Oil filter adapter seal kit

1994 1500 suburban, 5.7, automatic, AC. I'm needing to replace the seal/seals above the adapter where the oil filter spins on, now leaking again. A mechanic a few years ago did this, his part number was #088893990, but I can't find that anywhere, or anything about this part. Does anyone have a store source and part number for this? And instructions might help, too. I have NAPA, CarQuest, Checker/Schucks/Kragen, AutoZone near me, even Pep Boys.

OK, found this, tracked it down. What this is: it's the gasket kit / O-rings used when a tow package (front external oil cooler) is added to GM engines in trucks and SUVs. So it's called oil cooler seal kit, even though it's not on the oil cooler itself. Part number is Fel-Pro ES72671, and it's even available at AutoZone and Checker/Schucks/Kragen for $10. After removing the oil filter, the adapter can be removed by removing two allen-head screws, with 1/4 inch allen wrench in a 1/4 inch socket.

I know this is an old thread, but it is a current problem for many K1500 4WD owners. The Felpro Es-72671 kit is NOT correct. The "O" rings and flat gaskets do NOT fit the filter-to-adapter-to-block grooves and facings. There is also a Dorman 82560 kit that sells at the same aftermarket places that will also NOT hold up. The correct set would be the GM 88893990 p/n that is currently available at the dealers for about $5.

The reason this is so important is that the flat gaskets in the kits won't work, and if trimmed to fit, the Dorman gasket will cause the gap between the large "O" ring and the groove in the adapter housing to be slightly too large. Having used this Dorman set (because the Felpro set didn't fit at all)..and after trimming the flat gasket to fit the opening, I was actually able to run the truck for about 5000 miles without a visible problem.

Then, while on the highway with the burb full of grandkids and 30 miles north of nowhere (Tonopah, Nevada), my wife saw the warning lights come on. The oil had forced its way past the large "O" ring and pushed out onto the ground within a few miles of the pressure dropping. Fortunately, she was able to get to the edge of town and stop. Long story short, my son and I made a very early 200+ mile trip (each way) the next day to Tonopah, jacked up the burb, pulled the adapter and seals, tossed the gasket, reinstalled the old "O" ring, and got back to Las Vegas....about $200 lighter in the wallet and feeling lucky it didn't cost us an engine.

There were no leaks all the way back and a few dozen test miles after returning, but tomorrow I'm picking up the new gasket/"O" ring from the dealer and getting it back in where it belongs.

I used two (I believe) O-rings from the Felpro kit on my 1994 C1500 Suburban 2WD 5.7 liter V8, I didn't have to do any cutting or modifying either. My mechanic had replaced such seals (maybe with a NAPA kit) a few years earlier, and whatever he installed started dripping after maybe two or three years, so I figured it was time to do it myself.

For most parts for my '94, it seems like there are multiple parts listed as possible fits, makes it a challenge to find correct parts unless you match up side by side.

Correct. The 2WD has a different oil filter setup than the 4WD. With 4WD axles in the way GM made a apecial adapter for the cooler lines and filter. It angles the filter away from the axles and is not vertical. The FelPro and Dorman kits are really made for the 2WD setups. I'll find out the exact difference tomorrow when I pick up the GM set that you correctly identified in your original post.

I just don't want to see anyone make the mistake I did and get the same results.

mishalah - great detective work there. Felpro is big, a leader, have you tried contacting their customer service directly, or I guess now that you know the GM part and have taken care of it, that you're satisfied?

I remember once on my Sub I went in to buy a master cylinder, and the computer there wanted to know what size my rear brakes were, like I "would just happen to know" that !!!!

I picked up the gasket and "O" ring set from the local Cheby dealer. To be sure I even gave him the VIN and we looked for any possible substitutes or variations. The gasket looks just like the one from the FelPro kit (not having that set to compare sizes, though). The gasket is a wide, flat total circle, about 3" in diameter, and with the bolt holes.

Fine, but the adapter piece has a large section cut out that I thought was made to fit the machined block. I assumed the gasket had to match that shape with the "bite" out of it. But the parts guy (not a service rep or tech) told me that the gasket didn't have to be "notched", but that it could fit flat all the way into the flat machined surface of the block. Since my son did the R&R I never saw the block where the adapter bolted on.

He's not available to install the new GM gasket/ring so I'm gonna do it...but first I want to make sure it's ok for the FULL gasket to be used.

If anyone has a pic of where the adapter bolts to the block it would sure help. :)

Alright...forget the pics. The new GM gasket and "O" ring is installed. So far, no leaks. But the last time it lasted 2500+ miles before leaking, soooooo....

The GM "O" ring is much fatter, though.

Next, it's the Pitman arm, idler arm, and tie rod ends. sigh. :(
