gear indicater on the dash of my 2000 rodeo won't move

When I shift from park to any other gear, the illuminated dash indicator, at times, does not move. When this happens, there are alot of bad noises when I turn and stop. Sometimes it will move if I shift to the 2nd gear position. This is the 3.2 - 6 cyl. auto.
