The V6 engine in my '99 Rodeo is kaput...due to my own stupidity. Now that I've confessed that, I've found an '04 Rodeo V6 engine that had only 32k miles on it, that I can have for $1500. The guy at the salvage business selling it says that the only change I'd have to make due to the year difference is to use my old '99 intake manifold. Is he right? Any advice?

Well, since nobody else replied, I guess I will. Several days later I have a second opinion from a chief mechanic that indeed only the intake manifold needs to be switched over. Otherwise a clean swap. Thanks, I guess.

Well, I guess no one really knew the answer to your question. It's not like we have all shunned you because we decided to not like you, or something.

I would think it would be a good idea to keep as much external engine stuff from your original engine as possible. The only reason I can think of for keeping your intake is that the fuel injectors are different and your PCM would have a hissy fit dealing with injectors of a different impedance. If it were me, I would strip the new engine down to the long block and use everything, including sensors, from the old engine. New water pump, timing belt, tensioner, reseal any possible leaks, all while the new engine is still out and accessible. Also, replace all the heater hoses that are a pain to get to with the engine in the truck.

Thanks for the suggestions. Why use the stuff off my old engine? Because I know they're working, and the stuff on the new engine is unknown? Or other reasons too?

A factor relative to that: my Rodeo has 117k miles, the new engine comes off a Rodeo with about 40k miles. (that 32k mile engine I mentioned turns out to be from a disreputable source)

The '04 was drive by wire and had ion sensing ignition. Neither of which the '99 had. The more external stuff you use off your old one the more chance of success you'll have at the swap.
