Transmission shifts from 1 -2 then N

Hello All,
1993 3/4 ton van, 5.7L, 177K miles, transmission suddenly just stopped shifting into 3rd gear, now just goes to N or slips. My none transmission trained mechanic said that they checked and no fault codes and all solinoids we activating during the testing.
Could it be something else, cause I will probably scrap the van if the trans is bad. Should I pull the pan and look around?

Yes pull the pan and check for any metal in pan and filter.
Also go over it with a good transmission capable scanner.
Check for codes and read out transmission data and post back any transmission codes,

Hello,
The mechanic read the codes and tested the soliniods in the trans. he said he could hear the soliniods clicking so he said the problem was internal.

Was there any codes?
Did you get a good transmission scanner on it?
Have you pulled the pan and looked in it or run a pressure test?
