Last week the battery light came ON so i took it to the shop, the mechanic said that the alternator has gone bad. After few minutes, the alternator turned ON and the battery meter was showing 14~. But ever since i came back from shop...i've been getting the battery light ON. Is there any fuse to check, or any connection. Could you tell me where the fuse is located? I don't have a really pro stereo( JBL 60 W RMS front, Sony 60 W RMS back, 10" jbl woofer connected to back speaker directly). Can that cause the alternator to go bad?....

I wouldn't think the amp has anything to do with the alternator dying, unless your amp draws a lot of amps. It's more a function of mileage on the car. Which car is this? Your public profile shows you have 2 Camrys and a Corolla. How many miles on the car? If it were a blown fuse, the alternator wouldn't work at any time. You said "After few minutes, the alternator turned ON and the battery meter was showing 14~". I would check the belt for slipage. If the belt is tight (and I would assume your mechanic checked that) then most likely it is worn brushes inside the alternator. Time for a replacement alternator. This is a very easy DIY job. If you are not sure how to do it, download the appropriate manual for your car. They are stickied at the top of this forum.

thanks mike for your reply...my car has 105 k miles on it. its 1994 camry 4 cylinders. Today morning the car turned ON but died directly after...it happened twice then on the 3rd time i pressed the gas pedal and the battery light went off..and the car remained ON... can the alternator cause the car not to remain ON?..

Yes it can. The alternator's purpose is to recharge the battery as the battery is being used. If the alternator is not recharging the battery properly, the battery will eventually get so weak that it can't produce enough electricity to fire the spark plugs. It seems you have reached that point. You need to recharge the battery from an outside source, like a battery charger, before you will be able to drive it anywhere again. A jumpstart will probably start the car, but it will most likely die again as soon as the cables connecting it to the donor car are removed. Either recharge the battery, or have the car towed somewhere to have the alternator replaced, asssuming you don't want to replace it yourself.
