Tailgate lock problem

I have a '93 Bravada that has the tailgate lock handle part missing - only the lock cylinder remains. I can open the glass with the button on the dash, but I can't open the tailgate at all, even if I insert the key and turn it to the right.

I have a replacement assembly to install, but I can't get the old one out since I can't put the tailgate down to get to the inside trim screws.

Any ideas or help is much appreciated...
