2004 chevy cavellier -fan coming oncaddilacman 06-29-2008, 08:54 PM i drove about 20km and parked for 1 hr. no problem - on the return trip home when i arrived and parked in my driveway shut the car off i heard the fan motor come on i checked under the hood and it was quite warm i checked the heat gauge and was a tad over 90. it was a warm muggy day type weather i am wondering what is causing the fan to come on with the heat guarge only shows 90 and not in the hot zone. also anifreeze resevoir is full - not losing any antifreeze and the oil is clean. this has done this a couple of times mostly on short runs on the highway it run fine and the heat guage stay in the normal range around or under 90. can u trust these guages? i do not get any check engine lights etc. any suggestions. i could not find where the thermostat is i thought it was the one going into the engine took off the hose but could not see a stat. where else do you look. ? any advise appreciated :loser: Helmuth48 06-30-2008, 03:56 PM They mate... here is what I would do...go to a shop that has a scantool and they can read the temp coming from the sensor and see if it NOT reading correctly. Yes, it can go bad. Normally the fan will come about 100C. Do you have the cool air ( the yanks call it Air Conditioning ??) in that vehicle. ?? If yes, the fan will run when you turn it on. That is normal.... Next is to find out why it is getting hot !!! Check or replace the Thermostat is a good start. Go to AutoZone.com...for the location and how to replace the Themostat....if that is what you want to do.. They have a lot other information for your car also.... Cheers Mate, JzJzz and the Man from Down Under....I am going to the pub!!! Helmuth48 06-30-2008, 04:09 PM Hey mate...here is some more information about the fan operation.... In newer vehicles with computerized engine controls, fan operation is regulated by the engine control module. Input from the coolant sensor, and in many cases the vehicle speed sensor too, is used to determine when the fan needs to be on. CAUTION: Many electric fans are wired to come on anytime the engine is above a certain temperature, regardless of whether the engine is running or not. This means the fan may come on after the engine has been shut off. So keep your fingers away from the fan at all times unless the battery or fan motor wires have been disconnected. CHECKING THE FAN Four things can prevent a fan from coming on when it should: a bad temperature switch or coolant sensor (or problem in the switch or sensor wiring circuit); a bad fan relay; a wiring problem (blown fuse, loose or corroded connector, shorts, opens, etc.); or a failure of the fan motor itself. Only the latter would require replacing the fan motor. One way to check the operation of the fan motor is to jump it directly to the battery. If it spins, the motor is good, and the problem is elsewhere in the wiring or control circuit. Another check is to test for voltage with a voltmeter or test light at the fan's wiring connector. There should be voltage when the engine is hot and when the A/C is on. Good Luck Mate....JzJzz .....Have a cold tinny !!!! Foster's Rule vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
