Hello board. Big problem here. I went to start my 94 sunbird. turned key to start and did'nt start. That is when I saw smoke from the hood..kind of like a shhhh sound.. turned key again and it started right up but motor reved like gas pedal was floored so I shut it off.. tried again and it does this again and will not come down to regular idle. Needless to say It is left stranded.
I have no clue as to what has happened to it...
I sure hope that someone can help me out with this...........

i had a similar problem like this in my 91 2.0L. when i had it checked by my mechanc he siad that it is a cooling system temp sensor. this might be the problem you have.

Any luck since you posted, as I have a similar problem, but mine is a 87 non turbo. Hits about 3000rpm when cold (40-45 deg F in Florida). Someone said the MAP sendor, . I can test temp sensor with ohmmeter and see. Any replies would be appreciated.
