my headlights went out what happened?

my headlights kept cuting off and on then they just stoped working. my parking lights stay on and my high beams stop working to. have no idea what happened, but if somebody knows please help! it is a 91 caprice.

I always like to start with the simple. So...check the manual and see if the headlights and parking lights are on different fuses. Then check the headlight fuse to see if it is blown. This would be the simple answer for all of your headlights going out at once.

The headlamp system on these will use a fusible link and not a fuse. The fusible link is on the starter solenoid. This is not likely to be the case, however.

From personal experience, you have a failed dimmer switch. This can be replaced but it's located on top of the steering column behind the dash - between the ignition switch and the neutral safety switch. It actually shares a screw with the ignition switch.

I implore you not to buy a replacement switch from any source other than AC/Delco. Avoid Autozone (Wells) switches at all conceivable costs!

so the only way to replace it is to pull the whole dash off and work from there? is it possible to reach up behind it from under the dash to replace it?

Yes, you replace it from below. No need to remove the dash.

and would that cause my dome light not to work cause im wondering if i need to change the headlight switch and the switch to dim the dash lights and turn the dome light on?
