Changing out head gasket?

My 86 720 with the z24 engine blew a head gasket. I am wondering if I should attempt to replace it myself. Can someone give me an idea about the process and especially how hard would this be. I have replaced one other on an corola and it wasn't to bad a job.

A local mechanic said he would do it for $400.00. I would like to save this money if I can.

Thanks in advance

the hardest part is the timing chain.
the job can be done without the timing chain cover being removed but depeding on mileage and condition of the engine ,i find it easier and more exacting to remove the timing chain cover whan replacing a head gasket.

that way the chain and its components can be examined and repalced if necessary.
