92 bonnie transmission question

I'm thinking about getting a 92 bonnie for my daughters first car
the problem is after about 30 miles or so the transmission quits pulling
till it cools off then you can drive again, my question is could be a problem with the lock-up soilenoid?? or a more serious problem

Check engine light on?The transmission might be going bad and that one is a cable shift.

Its not a cable shift...

Its a 4T60-E... Its sounds as if the trans is failing... How does the fluid look? Red, Pink, Brownish, Dark brown or Black?

It is a cable shift and I have never seen a 1992 without an cable. It went electronic in 1993.Pop the hood and you should see a cable with a black plastic housing going to the throtttle and to the transmission case.

it may be too late but try some fluid conditioner for the seals and such
it may work for a little while

check the fluid

if it is anything except nice and red and clean and semlling like nice trans fluid then its probably too late

92 is the old style 4T60

before the E-lectronic version came out

i just had a 92 bonneville with th same trans and we have replaced many of these trannies for ppl over the years, and i have owned others as well, did a 96 cutlass supreme one before that that roasted itself

the bonny had 171k on it and still doing pretty ok but the lockup solenoid was screwy

typical though

i put seal conditioner in it and ran with it, still was doing great when i traded for a 91 s-10 pickup that i drive now with even more miles on it than the bony had, 700r4 trans, IE the RWD version of the 4T60

It depends on the car... The W Bodies used the THM440-T4( 4T60 ) Through the 1993 Model year...

1991 Was the first year for the 4T60-E... In 1991 All of the C Bodies used the 4T60-E with either the 3800 L27( Tuned Port ) or the Caddy 4.9 PFI...

All of the H Bodies went to the L27 and 4T60-E for the 1992 Model year...

W Bodies did not get the 4T60-E until the 1994 Model year when they went to the 3100 Vin M engine

The N Body also did not get the 4T60-E until 1994

This 1992 Bonneville has a 4T60-E... After working on them and rebuilding them, the 1992 to current does not have the TV cable...

However 1987-1991 Bonneville all used the THM440-T4( 4T60 ) and those do have the TV cable...

Even better yet all he has to do is count the wires from the connector... 5 Pin is 440-T4, 7 Pin is 4T60-E, And I guarantee its a 4T60-E

1992 4T60s were not electronic, cable shift.I have seen this on the 1992 and down bonnevilles,98s and delta 88s,luminas,Grand Prixs and cutlass supreme's.Went electronic in 1993.There are some changes to these transmissions that have to be done or they will not shift right due to wrong gear ratio. The 4t60s,change the governor to the replacement from the old one.The 1993 and up,change the final drive and sometimes electrical.

Let me repeat this... ALL 1992 Model Year Bonnevilles Had the 4T60-E

87-91 Bonnevilles ALL Used the THM440-T4( 4T60 )

ALL 1991 C Bodies( Park Ave, Olds 98, Caddy with the 4.9 ) Had the 4T60-E

ALL 1992 H Bodies( LeSabre, Olds 88, Pontiac Bonneville ) Had the 4T60-E

And again ALL W Bodies through the 1993 Model year used the THM440-T4( 4T60 )

And Again ALL W Bodies 1994+ Used the 4T60-E

Not sure where you are getting your info from but 1991 Was the first production year for the 4T60-E...

On the 1992 Bonneville

1G2HX52L
1G2HZ52L
1G2HY521

These all used the 4T60-E

2.84 ( Base model )
2.97 ( Supercharged Only )
3.06 ( Performance Gear Ratio) SSE NA, or SE with an added option group

And the RPO for the Above trans will be M13

Did not and is a cable shift! You are full of BS.I seen one 1991 98 with a cable shift which was a customer's car whom I know and he got rid of the car for a newer one.1992 and down was a cable shift called a 4t60.I replaced one in a 1992 cutlass ciara which was a cable shift.Your info is 100% wrong

Gentlemen everyone needs to calm down here and check this link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_4T65-E_transmission. The large 91 GM fwd cars had the 4t60e, some very early models were 4t60's but very few. I was a GM employed troubleshooter in those days.

The OP had a question concerning the 1992 Bonneville transmission! All Bonevilles from 1992-1997 use the M13 4T60E! No cable on this transaxle! The 1991 did have the 4T60! Click Here (http://www.drivetrain.com/autotranscrossref.html#Oldsmobile) for a good reference guide.

1) what does the A Body Olds Cutlass have to do with this? And just for sake, Just like the W Body, the A Body got the 4T60-E in 1994 attached to the 3100...

2) Call me what ever you will.. The topic author is looking at a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville... I'm quite sure the trans is failing.. and sadly we have done nothing to help the topic author here...

3) Continue to say what ever you will about me and my info... I have nothing more to add to this thread
