99 Cherokee 4WD Front Drive Shaft ?Repair?gkettman 05-22-2008, 11:49 AM My 99 4WD Jeep Cherokee had a vibration or rumble. I eliminated it by removing the front drive shaft. Based on other posts I'm assuming the problem is the "Slip Yoke" on the front drive shaft. The U-Joints all seem fine. There is play where the rear splined shaft slides into the front drive shaft piece. Can the slip yoke (assuming that's the connector, with a zirc fitting, where the two pieces of the drive shaft fit together) be repaired or replaced? I checked a couple of local auto parts stores but wasn't filled with confidence on their parts. The diagrams didn't match what I have or else it looked like only part of the shaft (the front piece). If it can't be repaired what is the best place to get a new one? Is it something that I could get from a salvage yard or is it a high-wear part and that wouldn't be recommended? Thanks for any advice. GGK MagicRat 05-22-2008, 09:39 PM Go for a professionally rebuilt shaft, with all new parts. You should be able to get a driveline specialist shop do this if your auto parts store cannot supply you with one. Wrecking yard parts are a real shot in the dark. You may have to install several before finding a good one, then, how long will the used shaft last? dave92cherokee 05-23-2008, 02:56 PM With a 99 MY you can probably find one at a junkyard in pretty decent shape. Nothing wrong with using shafts from a JY, only problem is when there's been extensive damage to the jeep that could affect the shaft. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
