99 Suburban - Coolant Smelland9800 05-16-2008, 08:45 PM I can smell engine coolant when it's running, what should I test and or check (and how do I do it)? I don't have any codes, and besides a small exhaust leak, it runs fine. It was losing coolant for a while, but it hasn't lost any for about 2 - 3 weeks. If you can smell a hot syrup smell then its most likely your heater core leaking under your dash. It's a chevy thing i see a lot of. If you don't smell it then you need to check your hoses and clamps and make sure your not losing any fluid from a hose thats falling on the exhaust or manifolds. Start there. j cAT 05-23-2008, 06:34 PM I can smell engine coolant when it's running, what should I test and or check (and how do I do it)? C2500 2wd 271,000 miles 7.4 engine Auto with a/c with all those miles look at radiator end tanks for cracks ..esp were radiator hose from thermostat goes to radiator, remove plastic shouds for a good inspection and9800 05-24-2008, 07:08 PM I already replaced the radiator last fall. j cAT 05-25-2008, 10:15 AM I already replaced the radiator last fall. just because your radiator is fairly new does not eliminate this from one of the componets that are causing your problem...i have had these new radiators fail many times right out out the box....thats why when i replace a radiator i pressure test first.... take a good long look use a powerful light and you will find the leak,at radiator, hoses, intake, water pump,etc... MT-2500 05-25-2008, 10:37 AM You are going to have to have a look and see and test for the leak. Watch the engine oil for coolant in it. Is your windshield fogging up or smell more when running defrost? Pressure test cold and warm and hot. Look for leakage on and under anything that has coolant in it or threw it. Also they make a leak dye test kit for the hard to find leaks? MT IFallsRon 05-30-2008, 02:30 PM Lower intake manifold gasket may be leaking. I replaced mine on a 98 last fall. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
