yeah thats what i thought, there is no way im paying some one 1,000 just to put in rear gears. how hard is it to do your self, if u get like the rear gear kit install from summit or somthing.

Its easy after you've done it. Just take your time with it. But there is alot more to it than just bolting it together.

Exactly!!! I've never done it, never will. Unless you have someone who's done it many times before showing you how, I would not attempt it. Too many things to go wrong. Kind of like the trans. Not as complicated ofcourse but, just alot that could go wrong if you don't know what you're doing.

$1,000 is WAY TOO MUCH for that. Should be in the ballpark of $500. Call around and check.

I know you said you had an 86 so, that means you have the 7.5 rearend. Unless it's been changed. I would spend the money on getting an 8.8 from an 87-93, then get new gears.

$1,000 is way too high...I've had 'em done for $500 and $600. Shop around and find someone that knows what they're doin. And if you know a good mechanic, but he wants a couple extra bucks...do it. Don't try to scrimp too much---I know---had 4.10's put in my Mach1 and saved a buck or two over my regular mechanic --- big mistake. Guess what...my regular mechanic had to fix what the first guy f----- up. Tolerances were all wrong, wrong spacers.... it was a mess. Ended up paying twice for what I shoulda had done right the first time.

Yeah, you may be right. Maybe they started in 85 w/the 8.8 rear. Call a couple Ford dealers parts dept. and check. I could of swore it was 87 though.

I had an '86 GT and for me it was $200 for the gears and $200 for the instal for a grand total of $400. Doing it for $1000 is WAY to damn much.

That's way too high, I typically charge $300 for install plus parts.

1000? that's gotta be with the parts included...you'll spend about 320 for the gears and bearing kit and you'll have to pay for carrier shims which will prolly be around 35 so your looking at $355 on parts, labor is probably going to be around 5 hrs. I don't know where your located but a dealership will prolly be 100/hr...so your looking at $855 + tax....yeah 1000 is a little high...I wouldn't take it to them...they probably don't want to do it so the jacked the price hoping that you wouldn't go through with it...most likely they aren't capable of doing it either....and no don't go out and do it your self because you def. don't have the right tools for the job...and the 86 had the option of either a 7.5 or an 8.8....shop around a little bit before you commit anywhere and make sure what rearend you have before anything...have you thought about swapping in a new diff? go posi for sure limited slip is junk...
