I have a '98 Monte Carlo. I am in the process of replacing the alternator for the 2nd time since I purchased this car in October '97. I have just discovered that the alternator was replaced 2 times as well before I bought the car. What else do I need to be checking to resolve this issue?

In my experiences, the bearing (either front or rear) in the alternators go out on a regular basis. Nothing you can do about that except say a little prayer before you put it in. (and make sure the one you buy has a lifetime warranty and you don't lose the slip)

before operating the new alternator you MUST have battery load tested and fully charged with a charger at 10amps max....

the other common problem is high powered audio equiptment will kill your alternator....try to install the large filter capacitor to smooth out the power surges if this is applies to you...

AZ electrical componets are not recommended.....
