At what temperature should radiator fan start

When driving, my 98 venture has a coolant temp of about 200 deg. When left at idle the temp goes up to 230 before kicking on. Is this normal? If not, possible problem?

Thanks

I found this informaton, so I guess the 230 temp is OK.

Engine Cooling Fan Description - Electric
These vehicles use 2 360 mm (14.2 in.) cooling fans to aid air flow through the radiator. Electric motors drive the cooling fans. These motors are attached to the radiator. Motor size varies with each engine option.

A coolant temperature switch activates the fan motors. This switch regulates voltage to the cooling fan relay. This switch operates the fan whenever the engine coolant temperature exceeds 110°C (230°F) . A transducer can also activate the circuit, depending on the A/C compressor head pressure going to the condenser.

Is the sensor for this located on the radiator?

I believe the ECT sensor threads into a coolant passageway in the intake manifold. Not sure but I thought the one on the radiator was a coolant level sensor.

Makes sense.

My fans will not kick on automatically. They do work with the AC on.

I have replaced the ECT on the intake, temp gauge looks good. Thought there might be another sensor somewhere for the auto kick on.

Will need to check the relay.
