96 plymouth GV trans leak???bigshooter9270 04-17-2008, 10:54 PM Well im back again and am completely stumped... i have a trans fluid leak coming from the transmission (differential front cover?) of my 96 grand voyager 3.3L V6. checked all the trans cooler lines and clamps, the pan gasket, axle seals and drain plug for leaks and none as i cleaned and dried then drove to find leak. is leaking from left side of trans and is spraying all over the bottom of the vehicle on drivers side and when idling will leave 3 to 4 half dollar size spots. the mechanic that did oil change on vehicle today said that the leak is coming from the cover either the gasket or the cover is rusted and pitted and needs replacement. any ideas if this sounds correct??? and also am i destined to use silicon sealant due to not being able to find a gasket at any parts store and am i having to find a used cover to replace mine if it is damaged?? any info or expertise would be greatly helpful. tired of the leaks and worried about causing more problems in the future. the trans is rebuilt from a previous private party that owned it and the vehicle has 220000 miles but runs like a trooper. thank you again :banghead: tempfixit 04-18-2008, 01:20 AM Well im back again and am completely stumped... i have a trans fluid leak coming from the transmission (differential front cover?) of my 96 grand voyager 3.3L V6. checked all the trans cooler lines and clamps, the pan gasket, axle seals and drain plug for leaks and none as i cleaned and dried then drove to find leak. is leaking from left side of trans and is spraying all over the bottom of the vehicle on drivers side and when idling will leave 3 to 4 half dollar size spots. the mechanic that did oil change on vehicle today said that the leak is coming from the cover either the gasket or the cover is rusted and pitted and needs replacement. any ideas if this sounds correct??? and also am i destined to use silicon sealant due to not being able to find a gasket at any parts store and am i having to find a used cover to replace mine if it is damaged?? any info or expertise would be greatly helpful. tired of the leaks and worried about causing more problems in the future. the trans is rebuilt from a previous private party that owned it and the vehicle has 220000 miles but runs like a trooper. thank you again :banghead: Check to make sure the seals on the solenoid pack are not leaking. RIP 04-18-2008, 03:27 AM If I told you this before disregard. May or may not apply. I had a leak a few years ago that would collect on the top rear of the tranny, overflow and cover the underside of the van and the rear hatch. I lived with it a few years then it finally got bad enough to force me to pry the wallet open - a tramatic experience. $700 later the tranny had a new front pump seal and bushing. Leak was gone. Fluid was getting past the seal and leaking out a sensor then pooling on top. bigshooter9270 04-18-2008, 03:59 AM i took it to my friends house with a garage and we used degreaser to clean everything we could reach. let it dry for 30 mins then he took it out and drove it, came back and parked it back in the garage over cardboard and on ramps. he climbed underneath and looked and told me it looks like its coming from the side of the tranny by the cover as the top and side on the passenger side of the tranny is dry. also no fluid leaking from any of the seals or sensors that he could see with the spot light and dry rags and fingers we both used to find leaks. im stumped now and am afraid that the person that rebuilt it didnt use enough silicon on the cover?? or the cover itself is damaged as he says it looks like it has been bent by something hard. are new covers available? and am i stuck with the silicon or is there a gasket for that available?? thanks again but i will check more in the following days to really dig and maybe take it to my mechanic to really get a closer look. tempfixit 04-18-2008, 06:28 AM I believe dealers have a reusable rubber gasket. http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1118023/vehicleId,2320603/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,1991/partType,01192/shopping/partProductDetail.htm Take the dust cover for the tranny off and see if the torque converter or inside of tranny is wet from fluid, usually 4 or 6 bolts to remove. Easy task to look. Good Luck vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
