2001 3.2L Trans code P0740

Two weeks ago my check engine light came on. The codes came up as P0700 & P0740 (Torque converter clutch circuit open). My mechanic has cleared the code 3 times and it keeps returning. I had him flush the trans and put in a new filter. He also put an additive in that he said might help. The car is driving and shifting just like it always has from what I can tell. No noises, hard shifts or slipping. Now he is telling me I need to replace the torque converter and that I should rebuild the trans while it's out. Ouch...

I have put nearly 1000 miles on it since this started (100 miles a day for work) and this original OEM trans has 145,000 miles on it. Should I try replacing the Input/Output speed sensors first? Should I try reseting the TCM first (dissconect the battery for more than 30 minutes)?

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

P0740 Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit. Circuit means it is most likely an electrical problem.Wiring or the solenoid itself could possibly be bad. Last on the diagnostics usally is abad controller. You should take the car to a good trans shop or the dealer.

Thanks jpb53.

The trans specialist is the one telling me I need a torque converter. I'm not convinced since it shows no signs of mechanical problems...

Is the solenoid inside of the trans or can it be replaced from the outside? Any links to good diagrams would be appreciated.

I found this on another forum, it is a Complete Factory Service Manual for a 2002 Intrepid. I think it will be very valuable to you for your problem.
