I have a 2002 Durango SLT that I'm having problems with. It has a 5.9L (360) in it. Sometimes after start up and driving 1 to 2 miles it will miss and backfire through the intake. If you shut it off, and restart the car, it resets itself and is fine till the next time it happens. The car has 100,000 mi on it. and had a MAJOR tune up at 85,000 mi. I have replaced the fuel pump, the throd. pos. sensor, and now the crank sensor. It does not show any codes when you hook it up to a box. I'm at a loss, and so is my mechanic. I'm tired of just throwing parts at it to try to fix the problem. Any help would be apreciated.

sounds like late firing, or complete lack of firing. Only it's intermittent. So, I would have to say bad ignition module or main computer. Neither one is easy to diagnose with it being intermittent. I think you will probably just have to replace them one at a time, start with the cheapest one, which is probably the ignition module.
They are both easy to change, so you won't have to pay your mechanic's labor.

I have an '01 Durango with a 360 as well. I have found that mine does something very similar. I notice it after driving a couple miles and I try and get on the Interstate and I'm speeding up. It sorta misses and chugs a little before going. It usually goes away after it gets fully warm or I stop and restart it.

I've noticed mine almost always on rainy days or days when the outside air pressure has made a dramatic change. Like the air fuel mixture isn't quite right and it takes time to get it reset or correct. Like the air change while it sat not running isn't registering correctly and it is stuck in a "bad" state.

I had some work done a litte over a year ago, along with a new fuel pump and such. It was much worse prior to that, and has since come up only once a month or less. So I havn't done anything since then regarding this situation.

Good luck.
