2001 Windstar.

fixed 171/174 codes through the lekemby.com site, changed the upper intake cover, idling great, cleaned out IAC, throttle body plate at air intake. Air filter is only 15K miles on it. Ran a lot of Berryman Chemtool, and it really helped with hesitation under load (40mph range)

I am getting a howling sound kinda at idle that sounds like an air problem. I didn' t do anything recent to casue it. I have changed plugs recently... it is pretty loud, and I noticed it when my wife was pulling out of the driveway yesterday. I did change the power steering fluid about two months ago, but no problems until recently....

any takers on a howling air sound.....i think it goes away once you are under way.... is it a fan????

side question... did you have high idling problems and surging up until engine got warm ? is that why you changed the isolator bolts ?

This intake is a loud piece of ....

They all suck pretty loud near the driverside fender.. Check a few things under the hood like the pcv valve and line.. Did you infact relearn the PCM after that major repair? Intake bolts etc.? If it was leaking some, and now not leaking,, PCM is making up the difference because its use to it leaking..

I cant come up with anything more then that, unless your kids put a whirler thingy in the Tail pipe which is always FUN!

The place (other than the throttle plate in the throttle body) that causes the most resistance to airflow (at least on my '96 3.8L) is the point that the air tube connects to the inner fender on the driver's side.
This, being the smallest opening, is going to be a restriction point to airflow.....and a source of noise.
This would be at the maximum when you have the accellerator floored......so that the throttle body plate is fully open and the engine is sucking in the most air.

Hey, Tartesauce, where can I get one of those whirley thingies? That's funny. What are they? I need a bunch to harrass some people!

Spuggedy, have you listened around your engine compartment at idle and been able to isolate where it is coming from? Change idle to match engine speed you have heard it, like when wife was driving it. Does the radiator fan come on at the same time? Could this be coming from the front of the engine? Belts, pulley bearings, accessory bearings, water pump. I have a few of those things make noise that will go away at higher rpm. Perhaps the air tubes pre filter or post filter are not properly connected. Is the air box tight? Are any of the air tubes cracked? You may have something like a leaf sucked up into the air tube in the fender?
Let us know what you find.
