Tranny problems

I have a 1992 Accord automatic with only 78,000 miles on it. The tranny has been acting really weird lately, some days it will run and shift fine, but other days it seems to get stuck in one gear and will just rev up, then i have to shut the car off and restart it, it will run fine for awhile, but then do the same thing??? It usually happens at a stop light, but it has happened when i was driving :banghead: I just can't figure it out and any help would be great.

check your trans fluid then check the trans shift sylinoids there should be one for every gear

The fluid looks like new and clean. Where are the trans shift sylinoids ?

located on the front of the tranny they look like cylinders silver in color and have a two wire pigtail on them as far as checking them i know you need a meter but they are right on the front of the trans u cant miss em they are right next to each other

Ok, i changed both sets of trans shift sylinoids... still does the same thing :banghead: when i start the car its fine, then it will drive a bit, then it will slip out of gear and act like it's in neutral. If i stop then restart the car, it will work again for about 5 mins, then start to kick out or seem to not go in gear?? hmmmm, any other ideas? there is no grinding what so ever and the fluid is clear as new any help would be great, thanks

is there a cel if not then the only other possible is the torque converter or the internals of the trans also make sure that all the plugs in the engine bay are plugged in because i had an unplugged plug for the cruise and the trans would only have one gear if all else fails i would lean towards the trans or try a trans flush and make sure you have honda z-1 trans fluid only dex mercon 3 causes hard shifts and or slips even though the fluid looks good smell it for burnt smell and do you know if the fluid is z-1 honda fluid or dont know

what do you mean by cel? and i'm going to try flusing and putting in the right tranny fluid. not sure what kind is in it now.. btw, thanks so much for the help !

cel= check engine light and if your not sure what kind of trans fluid is in there check it for burnt smell also honda z-1 fluid goes in there its like 5 or 6 dollars a quart and if the fluid smells burnt then change and flush but when refilling be sure you put the same amount back in

No check engine light... I'm thinking i'll try flushing the tranny and putting the right fluid in. is all i do is drain it and refill it? And i assume the drain plus is right under the tranny? Thanks

drain plug is gonna be a 3\8 ratchet so take a 3\8ths ratchet and the plug will be on the passenger side the plug has a square in it and the ratchet will fit in there and just remember honda z-1 fluid no dex\merc 3 and let me know what happens

Ok, flushed and changed the fluid and still the same thing. I did notice some gunk type stuff on the bolt that i had to take out to drain it. it didn't have any shavings or anything and it was real smooth almost like grease.... but still the same thing.. reverse don't seem to slip as often, but when i first start the car or shut it off for a few minutes it will run fine for about 3-4 minutes, then it will start to slip. almost seems like it would be if i had a clutch and had it pushed in... it just revs up :banghead:

did you remember to cycle the gears while filling up the trans and had the car on because if you drained completely then you would have to refill the trans and the torque converter but from the troubleshooting im gonna say that your torque converter is no good its like the clutch for a stick but sometimes they go bad so soon i dont know why but they usually go out at 250,000 but thats the worse case scenario not as bad as replacing the trans though

I had the same problem on my 91 Accord it ended up being the shift sensor on the tranny behind the right front wheel. Pull off the passenger wheel and look at the tranny right above the half shaft. It is round and black and held in with one 10 mill bolt. I changed mine and all is good now

Sounds like maybe you have some kind of blockage on the inlet side of the pump. If there is a filter/screen, try removing it and cleaning/replacing it. When you let the car sit, the debris settles, then when starting it pulls up into the screen and restricts flow.
