View Full Version : Ducati 750 Sport 1/9 Ducati 750 Sport 1/9 protarguy 03-23-2008, 04:01 PM this is my first WIP in this forum. I would k´like to show how I built a Protar Ducati 750 Sport from "junk". This was my starting point: http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6539323861643365.jpg A built model from Ebay, all the main parts were there, the model must have been exposed to heat beacause the frame was severly bent as you can see on the photo. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6435366261643461.jpg During taking apart the model the frame cracked and I had to repair several bend tubes. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3930636431333766.jpg I used several diameters of plastic tubing and putty. The rear frame loop was also replaced later on. Next I worked on the engine. With some help and drawings of a japanese modeller I was able to replace the cylinders with scratchbuilt ones. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3532666135613464.jpg Here you see the parts for the cylinders. The large engine fins are made of 0.4mm aluminium, the smaller "in bewteen" ones are of 0.6mm plastic sheet. The drawings for the parts were printed on self sticking label paper, put on the aluminium and plastic sheets and then cut out with sciccors and trimmed to shape with files. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6433616637646131.jpg Here is the completed front horizontal cylinder compared to the original kit piece. I also had to scratchbuilt half a part of the bevel drive housing. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6361623566356536.jpg Some parts for the engine. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3937323933333536.jpg The carbs also got some detail treatment. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6266363632626162.jpg First trial fit of the engine. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6332663334623136.jpg The tank, seat and frame in "raw" stage. I had to repair the seat "frame" several times. The plastic is very brittle after some 25 years of age.. So far the first steps on my Ducati kit restoration Cheers Uli ketje 03-24-2008, 06:27 AM Interesting built protarguy 03-27-2008, 07:55 AM Some small progress: The engine covers have been dechromed using oven cleaner and painted enamel gloss black as a base for Alclad Polished aluminum. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3865343530383332.jpg I reworked the gauge decals from a second decal sheet. The original ones were too small and printed not very clearly. (right) Some small hours of work with Adobe Photoshop showed better results.... (left) http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/1280_6331316334383065.jpg The simple reason for rebuilding this "junker" is : The price for a mint kit is insane!!:screwy: I also have a Protar Benelli 750 SEI. For this kit I am looking for a headlight housing and the right hand side engine cover. Can anybody help? Spare parts? Recasts? Uli protarguy 03-29-2008, 04:41 AM Some small progress: The rear light has been dismantled and some matte red colour has been removed. Then it has been painted with clear red inside and outside. Protar has provided a separate clear part for the licence plate lens. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3031653938393431.jpg I added two small screws for realism. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6666323263363139.jpg Mounted to the rear mudgard with wiring cable. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6236353536333833.jpg The side covers have louvers covered with wire mesh: http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3138336530613339.jpg There will be a decal covering the 750 script. For colour I choose a Duplicolour rattle can RAL 1028 "mellon yellow". First test fit of frame , engine and tank: http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6530373931616466.jpg Uli stainlesssteel 03-29-2008, 03:24 PM Interesting restoration project you've got there! im going to follow this one as well :) protarguy 04-03-2008, 04:06 PM Some progress: The wheels are in the works! Here you see the front rim and hub in my "wheel-o-matic" centering jig. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3931333730346438.jpg The holes for the spokes have already been drilled and the hub has been painted matte aluminium. The spokes are 0,4mm stainless steel rod, the spoke nipples are 0.8mm brass tube. One side done. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/6261643763653035.jpg Here are the completed wheels and above the rest of a kit wheel with plastic spokes. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/1280_3563393664356435.jpg This has been an afternoon´s work but it is worth it, don´t you think? Protarguy stainlesssteel 04-03-2008, 05:45 PM Wow, brave try with the wheels! I remember a site where it shows how to do it...dont remember which..anyways Keep updating! protarguy 04-04-2008, 12:27 AM Wow, brave try with the wheels! I remember a site where it shows how to do it...dont remember which..anyways Keep updating! You mean this site? http://web.mac.com/risk_suzuki/Site/HOW_TO.html Uli stainlesssteel 04-04-2008, 10:20 PM You mean this site? http://web.mac.com/risk_suzuki/Site/HOW_TO.html Uli well not exactly, but VERY similar, i just found mine on another modeling forum, take a look at this http://kimshouse7015.com/, sorry it doesnt has subtitles, but im sure you'll find useful information there! and thanks for the site! denman2 04-09-2008, 03:07 PM Very nice to see this beauty seeing to be rebuild. I made this kit many years ago ( my first big scale ). I shall look if i have mine some where. good luck denman protarguy 04-10-2008, 03:26 PM A quick update: Started to work on the cables. Here you see the speedo cable and the rev counter cable. Both are some electric wires from the model train department. The fixing "nuts" were made of 2mm aluminium wire from a crafts store, rolled under a file to press the grooves into the wire. Then it was drilled in the right diameter and cut off. Voila- a "knurled thumb screw" (This is a Babelfish translation for the german "raendelschraube"..) The silver "shaft" is simply a selfsticking aluminium foil. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3637333762363835.jpg The bike put together for a quick check and motivation.. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3462303532666261.jpg I am waiting for the decals. A fellow modeler prints them on his Alps for me. The original Protar ones a rub-on stickers, not bad but I am afraid of fixing the long stripes on the tank. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/1280_3431643332376431.jpg The next task are the exhaust pipes. Stay tuned! joelwideqvist 04-11-2008, 02:16 AM wohaa, some excellent restoration work here! Incredible how you did those cylinders. /Joel protarguy 04-19-2008, 01:19 PM Small update: The exhaust system: the original on paper. Protar missed out on the crossover pipe which runs under the engine. (marked in red). I bent the exhaust tubes from 4mm solid aluminium rod to avoid kinks. T he silencers are from the model. First I wanted to cover them with Alclad Chrome but switched to good old Bare metal foil. These Alclad paints have a great shine but rub off very easily. I had to adjust the pipes several times. http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3339656339366230.jpg A test fit on the model: http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3236666434636638.jpg Uli protarguy 05-22-2008, 06:52 AM Here are some pics from the finished model in light May rain: http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3835333866363866.jpg http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3866623436383066.jpg http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3563663438313962.jpg http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/5480285/3365616537376363.jpg Hope you like it!
