My dad has a 2000 ford taurus with the vulcan 3.0 liter v6. The car has 160,000 miles on it. One day the car went into gear moved a couple of feet, made a clunk sound and that was that. We towed it back to our house, and pulled it in the garage thinking the transmission was shot.
I needed the garage for working on my truck, so i started the taurus up and put it into reverse, and the car went into gear. When I backed it out i found all of this clutch like matrial underneath it. Does anyone know what it could be?

The clutches in the automatic transmission should be captive in the fluid. The only thing I can think of that would look like clutch friction material on that car would be brake friction material.

I thought about that, so i took apart the brakes and they looked fine. They also work fine.
