The center of steering wheel (over air bag area) felt unusually hot to the touch...it was not parked in the sun...rest of dash was not hot..a friend checked and agreed it was puzzling...anyone else experienced this? What could it be? Is this a prelude to a bigger issue?...Should I have it checked for anything specific... :nono:Please don't say "have the loose nut behind the wheel, checked" racoondp@yahoo.com

Was it only hot on one occasion only?? If so, it could be possible that your air bag "deployed" but since it's a rather old air bag it might not have had enough strength to pop out. You know the chemical reaction for the airbag creates a lot of heat. On the other hand if it was weak enough not to pop out, it probably would not have made heat. Or wait, does the car make heat to deploy the air bag?? I forget. But then if it did "deploy" I suppose the air bag light would be on. Hmm. Well you could always just remove the panel under the steering wheel, over the pedals, with about 6 screws, then dig around the wiring and unplug the yellow airbag plug. But then the air bag light might come on and be annoying. Never mind the fact that the bag wont deploy in a real accident :P

The airbag chemicals are sealed inside the igniter. You will not be able to feel them as the igniter is under the actual fabric bag packed inside the vinyl cover.
Couple of questions. Does the airbag light come on when you start the car then go off in 6 seconds?
How long have you owned the car?
How many times has this felt hot?

I'll check back for your answers, but in the meantiume here are a couple of links to help you understand the situation

Also, you may want to check out this site for information on researching your own vehicle for factory recalls!!!

Thank you for the replies..sorry I have been off for a little while but I will check the links asap. I can't say for sure.. that this might be an isolated incident..I will say it was the first or 2nd time driving my new used car. However, having been both a service writer for independent repair shops/16 yrs.(retired from in'88) & a long haul commercial driver...I learned to become 'in tune with' or 'tuned into' to my vehicle, (inside and out)..I was not sure so I asked..especially since I read all the posts RE: lebaron, the things to get prepared to do battle with..ie: Trans trouble, leaks, elec windows, etc.
This forum thing rocks!
Thanks again for the help, will keep you posted if I have any more to report on this topic.
