First, sorry for really long first post. This covers progress during the last year or so...

I started modifying a Revell California Spyder kit to a Pininfarina Coupe. Rear lights look like they are good enough for this "conversion" and basic wheelarch shape is the same

First thing was to add 20 scale cm (about eight inches) to the wheelbase, and lenghten the rear to match the lenght of the real thing.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0246.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0252.jpg

The white plastic strips on the sides were used to help making character lines. The body was also cut lenghtwise to add somewidth. I made the basic shape to the rear end with plastic, and then used putty to get the shape right.

Headlight recesses were made from plastic sheet and round plastic tube:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0270.jpg

AMT '66 HT Mustang gave its roof for this project, the basic shape and angles were closest match that i could find.

This is what it looked like after modifying and some putty:

And here are yesterdays pictures. Basic shape is done, as are panel lines. Some tidying up to be done and then i'll continue with brightwork...

First of all, thanks for the feedback. I've been a victim of this BS (http://gigaom.com/2008/03/14/the-telia-cogent-spat-could-ruin-web-for-many/), so i could not access AF from home :banghead:

Yes, i thought that i might scare some of you from reading the rest of it

I'm hoping that someone here in Finland might be able to help me in casting this in resin when its done. Main reason is that PF Coupe would serve as a great base in Series II Pininfarina Cabrio and would even be quite good base for GTE.

Updates will be quite slow, because at the moment i think it will take a lot of work to get all panel lines even etc.

Not so fast niko...
pardon me to say this, is this your first time doing such a big mod?

i'm in the same heading as you too...doing some WOW mods, 5 rare ferraris now...but all half done. why!?

i thought of casting a new body for selling too.
but when i got into the most taxing part of how to integrate the existing (or build new) chassis, engine, interior, trunk or doors etc...you will find that by having a new resin body is just half of the story.

unless you're willing to cast ALL the self scratchbuilt parts along the way too, to create a full resin kit. then you're in business.

i suggest you try to complete this PF build first, along with a detailed documentation...and judge yourself if the amount of work & difficulties faced are viable for casting.

all the best!

Not actually the first, but first that will be finished, if there are no big unexpected problems.

As i said, the main reason for getting this cast WOULD be to get couple of good base bodies for other conversions for me, not for making money. For the ours invested in this, it will never be good business.

I started doing the bumbers. Both are modified Revell California Spyder items. For the front i had to use two bumbers to get the bumberettes also. Headlights are from Italeri SWB and rear lights from Revell/Italeri California spyder.

Lots of work, not so much progress:banghead:

Rear window frame is done, it still needs the final sanding etc. but the basic shape is there. Gasket needs a bit of trimming though.

Nope! i don't think so too...
it looks perfectly alright with me, so keep going bro!

nope again! don't let the slow progress distract you, remember we(mod-ders) have no instruction to follow, no parts to cut & glue etc...
it's all pure instinct, common sense/logic & gut feeling building such mods.

i felt the same too, i really did alot but the results just don't show!
as long as you stay focus & know what you're doing...you're doing fine!
i know...i'm enjoying it now, hehe!

say, if this car has a wheelbase of 2600mm(LWB)...then how much exactly did you add the extra length to it? 8.34mm!?
with that extra length, will you be moving the engine compartment towards the center or forward!?

say, LWB & SWB ferraris...i wonder if the bonnet piece for both types are of the same size? i need to ask you this cos' i'll be mod-ding a spyder SWB into a LWB soon, the Natuzzi 250GT spyder i'm doing currently set me thinking...

please advise & thankx!
stay focus!!!

8,33 mm is correct extra length in chassis, and that is what i tried to add. Of course i can't measure that so correct, but it is somewhere in between of 8 and 8,5mm. Extra length is, in this case, between the engine and rear axle.

If you can find one, all Ferrari owners manuals from the sixties have a drawing that shows mechanical layout drawn over the chassis. It doesn't have measurements, but from those drawings it is quite easy to figure out engine's positioning.

I'm quite sure that you can't change bonnets from one Ferrari type to other, so you'll just have to modify the existing parts.

Thanks again for feedback,

Finally got some visible progress on this one. Windshield frame is now mostly complete. I also modified the grille opening and aux. light housings on the front. Some shapes were modified a bit, including the roof. Bumpers are also mostly done now, corrected some asymmetric forms on those.

Body still needs the grille in front of the windshield, side window frames and bonnet panel lines to be complete. Of course some tidying up needs to be done also.

nice progress again...there was one thing i don't really understand in your build. did you putty & smoothen out the whole interior of the body as well too!? it look so smooth, very unusual for a mod build...

if so, what's the purpose for this? or are you gonna cast this body in resin?

Sorry for the late reply...

Yes i'm quite sure that a mold will be made and a couple of bodies will be cast. As i said earlier, the main reason is that 250 GT Pininfarina Cabrio II is so damn close to this one, also some lines of 250 GTE are quite close to PF Coupe. IF i cast this, it would be only natural to continue with those two.

humm, i get it...you can save alot of time from doing every bodywork all over again. with the castings you only need to 'trim' them.

good thinking! one lesson learn here from you...

so i reckon you're building a list of hardtop ferraris there?
you won't mind if i keep corresponding wth you as i'm also doing a list of spyder ferraris?
we do have something in common & they're the LWB ferraris.

keep posting the progress!

Well, my wife left me alone for a couple of days end this is the result. Door panels are done:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0985.jpg

Length of doorpanels is not correct yet, i have to get my donor kit before i can determine it for sure.

The dashboard is also complete:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0987.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0989.jpg

Of course there will be some knobs and gauges etc., but those can be added after everything else is done.

Both, the doorpanels and dashboard were done from sheet styrene by sandwiching several plates together and carving with files and knife. Silver color is just to show possible surface defects.

I also got good news today, couple of my friends will cast this in resin after its done.

I sanded 0,25mm styrene sheet a bit thinner, then glued it to another styrene sheet with a LOT of liquid glue. Glue almost melted the thinner sheet, which could then be formed with hobby knife handle. Finally i cut the pockets to shape.

Interior building goes on. Chassis tub is almost complete. Mostly scratchbuilt from sheet styrene. Only kit part used is lenghtened and dremeled Fujimi GTO interior. That was used to make sure that new interior would fit perfectly on lenghtened GTO chassis.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0196.jpg

I also started modifying the Fujimi GTO frame to match PF Coupes frame. So far only the length is corrected. Also the cross bracing between chassis rails is removed, new on will be made from styrene tubes.

Seats and engineroom walls almost finished

I started the seats by cutting and shaping some 1,5 and 1 mm sheet styrene, that would make the basic shapes of the seats:

These parts were then glued together with two other 1,5mm styrene pieces

When the shapes were ok everything was glued together and primered:

Shifter is made from Fujimi GTO+Italeri california Spyder+putty:

Thanks. I'll let you do those showcars. I try to be on the safe side and do these "boring ones". I dont want to do hundreds of hours of work and then notice that someone else did the same.

Gee niko,
are you referring to me!? hehe...

actually i intended to do the same here...not to cross path on any ferrari model that you've done or WIP too.

only then, can the whole AF ferrari community see all the various types of whatever 1/24 ferraris here that's not appeared in any form...great for an eye feast too!

VERY NICE!!

I was thinking you could do the Prince Bertil or one of the 1958 250 GT
speciales with extra side trim/grills. Good looking variations of your already
almost finished model.

I think you are safe with most of the early Ferrari street cars. So many nice
cars, so little time!

The exhaust system is done. Straight parts are styrene and bent parts are made of solder.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0270-1.jpg

And basicly this means that i have all the parts needed to convert a Fujimi GTO into a semi-curbside model of the Ferrari 250GT Pininfarina Coupe Series II.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/nniemi/250GTpfCoupe/IMG_0271.jpg

It will take couple of days to sand and fill all the small scratches etc. but this is it.

The last update, before i'll start actually building one. All parts are now primered. Body is painted with gloss colour to show the final flaws and those were sanded away. I also added engine mounts from revell kit, since in my opinion the engine block in those kits looks better than the fujimi one. And if i get my hands on one of the RMcoM SWB engines, it fits straight to those also.

There is only one company that does PE-detail parts for modelers that is in Czech Republic...

Excellent build-up and casting. I would love to get my hands on it if the price is good. When are you expecting it to be on sale??? :icon16:

By the way, are you using CMK's service for the resin casting and PE set??? That's the only company that I knew that is from the Czech and manufactures resin and PE aftermerket in large quantities. If it is them, then no doubt that the resin copies of your Ferrari will be in excellent condition.

PE is made by Eduard, designs by me. Resin casting is done here in Finland in quite small quantities. If you are interested, PM me and i'll give you the contact information.

Some castings are thin but the body itself is quite thick, in the MFH GTO range. This is of course my fault, i wanted the master to be rigid enough to allow heavy handling. Guys who did the mold and castings told me that the hardest part was the chassis, and i have to believe them. It is quite rare to see such parts in real commercial resin kits.

Thanks for the great feedback and Merry Christmas to everyone,

It is not possible because of the way these are cast. Window openings need to be closed before making a mold, so those channels would be closed anyway. Also that would make inner mold really fragile -> more costs.

Excellent work, bravo !

How are you going to build the chassis and engine bay ? using parts from the California kit ? will these parts still fit the chassis as it has been modified ?
thanks

nniemi
04-27-2009, 09:49 AM
This "transkit" needs Fujimi GTO as a donor kit. The chassis is a modified GTO chassis. Front and rear axle parts will be from Fujimi GTO. However, i did modify the chassis to accept Italeri/Revell/RMcoM engine, because the Fujimi engine has incorrect engine block and mountings. I'll build my kit as curbside plus, with full chassis hood unopened.

I'd say you'll see what i mean in couple of of days, i'll start building the chassis today.

-Niko

nniemi

Interior is finished. GTO Steering column was modified to look like PF Coupe steering column and steering wheel is from GTO. Everything else is from the transkit. Door panels needed some thinning, because they were cast with one sided mold. Dashboard needs also a bit dremel to fit, from the same reason.

Here is some more progress. Axles, brakes and wheels are ready. Frame is resin part from the transkit, tires are from Tamiya Morgan, wheels are Hobby Design items originally intended for the Fujimi GTO. Springs, brakes etc. axle related are straight from the Fujimi kit.

I needed to modify the resin frame and rear springs a bit to make ride height acceptable. Parts that were modified (some material cut away) are still unpainted in these pics.

What is your opinion on the Hobby Design PE wheels?

What is your opinion on the Hobby Design PE wheels?

1. Fronts and rears are the same width -> They are incorrect for GTO. For this PF Coupe and many other Ferraris that have same wheels front and reat they look great

2. The rim is only one part, so they are little harder to assemble than MFH wheels. MFH rims kind of "lock" the spoke layers on their correct positions, on HD rims they are just glued on one surface, imo this makes these a bit weaker.

3. Poor instructions, it is easy to assemble the hub part wrong way. How do i know this...

4. Rims and hub are steel, not aluminium as on most other similar wheels, colour is a bit darker.

Overall, they do look good when finished. I would recommend them on any other Ferrari, but not for GTO. Just take care when assembling.

Thanks Alex!

I'm trying to explain difficulties that some stupid master maker has made when designing the kit, because i know that there are at least couple of you who have bought this transkit. It is not as good as i thought it might be, but all problems have been quite easy to solve so far.

I'll probably stick with MFH wire wheels as they are not much more expensive and you get the tires too.

Interior is now fitted on the chassis. I also fitted Revell 250 Engine in the engineroom, and exhaust system on its place, so the chassis is now completed. To make chassis/interior fit inside the body i had to cut 1-1,5 mm from top of door panels behind the door. Also the front inner fenders needed the same treatment.
