1994 Buick LeSabre - No A/C or heat fan

The fan for the A/C, heat, & vents on my '94 LeSabre just stopped working the other day (I have auto climate control). The blower motor was replaced less than one year ago, so I assumed it was the resistor that had gone bad. I just replaced the resistor with an identical GM part and still the fan does not come on. Any suggestions? Thanks

Do you have voltage to the positive fan terminal with the fan in high position? If so, try tapping the fan motor with a hammer to see if it will run. Some of these replacement units are made in China nowdays and are subject to fail at anytime! Where did you get the blower motor resistor?

Thanks for the quick reply. The blower motor resistor was purchased online at "TheAutoPartsStore" and has the identical numbers as the one I removed. The old resistor had dark brown stains on the metal baffles and looked extremely weathered. How would I determine if I have voltage to the positive terminal? I tried tapping the blower motor with a rubber mallet while the fan was turned on, but it did not result in the the fan coming on. Thanks

You need to probe the Purple wire with the one lead of your DVMM and the other to ground with the fan set to run (ignition on). Did the blower resistor you installed look like the one in pic below? Was it an ACDELCO or Standard
Products #RU304?

You can pull the terminal on the fan motor & apply a 30 amp fused direct 12v feed to the positive terminal from the battery & a jumper to ground to test the motor.

Yes, the resistor I got is identical to the one in the picture and is an AC Delco part. I will try your tips tomorrow to see if I can get the fan to work. Thanks for all your help.

Finally able to check and I do have voltage to the positive fan terminal. However, I tried tapping the blower motor with a rubber mallet with the fan on high and it would not come on. Does this mean a bad blower motor? Thanks for all you help.

More than likely, the motor is bad. Have you tried running a 12v positive (30amp fused wire) direct from battery to the purple wire connection of the fan terminal? Remember, you must also supply a ground to the other terminal where the black wire connects. BTW, if the motor is bad, (grounded) it can fry your new blower resistor. Leave the blower motor terminal disconnected until you find the problem, or replace the motor.

No, I haven't tried the direct connect yet (long day at work). I may try that over this weekend. Thanks for the tip regarding disconnecting the terminal to the blower - I will do that right now. Thanks again. I will let you know how it turns out.

Follow up with by lack of heat/ac fan. Finally got around to replacing the blower motor today and still no fan. Checked all connections and they appear OK. Anything else I should look for?
Thanks

You said; “I do have voltage to the positive fan terminal” if so, how many volts did you see?

Borrowed a neighbors DVMM - not sure of the number of volts read, but the purple wire did have juice at that time (over one week ago). Thanks for your quick response.

Borrow the DVMM again and see what it shows. You need at least 6-8v on the low setting and progressively higher voltage on the upper fan settings. Not trying to discredit any vendor, but you may have a defective blower control module. Good luck getting a replacement from the vendor you bought this one from! My neighbor is gone 'til Wednesday, so I will wait until then to check it again. Really appreciate all you help and advice.

Quick follow up. Finally tested the positive terminal and got zero voltage. The "new" resistor was either defective or dead. Installed a used resistor from a recycle yard ($30) and the fan works like new. I will try and recover my cost for the "new" resistor from the seller, but am not too optimistic. Live and learn, I guess. Again, thank you for all your help with this problem. Although the total cost was higher than it should have been, I'm sure it was still considerably lower than taking the car to a mechanic.

Good troubleshooting and thanks for the feedback! Yeah, most vendors do not offer a warranty on electrical parts, they can simply say, you damaged the part! Good luck getting a refund from these folks!

Hey I am new and I have this same problem and signed up. I am having trouble locating the "new" resistor in the car for the fan for the A/C heat
