I believe that the '88 3800 engine is considered a "pre-series 1" engine. A lot of the coming series I ( '91, on ? )changes, but not all of them. Between the FWD 3.8 and the Series 1.

In 1988, the 3800 was identified as an LN3, (VIN code L) It produced 165 hp and 210 lb·ft of tq. This was considered a pre-series I engine; however, it did not carry that label. The LN3 is closely related to the L27, but the L27 has a two-piece, upper & lower intake and the LN3 is all one piece. BTW, The 3000 3.8 engine went through many internal & external upgrades between 85-95. It saw quite a few changes every year. It was considered as a “work in progress” for Buick. :grinyes:
