I'll be replacing the rear rotors and pads on my 01 Silverado, 4wd, locking differential. i noticed that the sheet metal connected to teh backing plate that surrounds the rotor is all rusted. Is the sheet metal part of the whole backing plate or can that be ordered separately? And, do I have to remove the axle to replace that part?

Thank you

I went to the dealership this am. Yes they are available separately. However, the rear axles will have to be removed. The biggest cost is the synthetic differential fluid (the one with the pleasant grape smell - per the package).

I have done this brake shield rear replacement ... the axle was not removed on my vehicle. I cut the shield in half and installed, no problems 2years now...

I would remove diff cover and carefully clean rear diff. then use RTV to seal gasket to diff cover and install.... drain plug only leaves too much debris inside as well as magnet on cover must be cleaned.....replace this diff oil 40,000mi to keep wear to minimum....

do your park brakes work?
