Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 - progressrobrex 03-17-2008, 06:24 AM OK, here's my next project. The Tamiya 1/24 scale Ferrari F40. I've been going through a dry spell as far as motivation to build is concerned so hopefully this won't be another started project that doesn't get completed (damn Playstation 3 - Call of Duty 4 :banghead: ) For this project I intend to superdetail the base kit but I'm not planning any major modifications to the body to keep it clean. We all know how good the base kit is so I'll just add some details along the way robrex style :screwy: Anyway, I started on the dash and wanted to replicate the finish on the real car so I removed all of the gauges and switches etc. to make it easy to paint without having to mask anything. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0037.jpg Then added the details http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0048.jpg The next thing I disliked about the Tamiya kit is the seats so I had to do some modifications. For some reason I deleted the pictures so if you want them just let me know and I'll post the before and after shots later:uhoh: I also CF'd the interior tub and added the rest of the interior details http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0025.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0027.jpg I have also started on the engine details which will be the biggest challenge of the kit (and also my favourite part:p ) First modification is the wastegate. Here's the kit part: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0014-1.jpg I machined and painted a new one: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0015-1.jpg and assembled the parts. Unfortunately I chipped some paint in the assembly process but I'll come back and fix that later http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0028.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0030.jpg That's it for now. I'll have machined wheels and more engine progress very soon so if you like what you see, stay tuned! Big Kahuna 03-17-2008, 07:16 AM Oh Goody Goody!!!!!!!!!! Looks nice so far. thadude 03-17-2008, 09:12 AM The start looks awsome! ;) What did you use for the interior to get the rough look if i may ask? Joe Blyth 03-17-2008, 11:49 AM Nice work, I really like the work you've done with the wastegate servo. ales 03-17-2008, 01:09 PM This is going to be fantastic (it already is!). MPWR 03-17-2008, 01:23 PM Off to a great start, this will certainly be fun to watch. The new wastegate and servo look terrific! Great idea also on drilling out and replacing the cockpit gauge bezels. I may have to try that when I get around to finishing my F40. Ferrari TR 03-17-2008, 02:36 PM Nice work. i'm looking fwd to more. mrawl 03-17-2008, 05:23 PM Sweet - very unique and HOT!! ddtham 03-17-2008, 05:35 PM I'm sure this is going to turn into one of your wonderful builds. The wastegate looks awesome, I'm tuned. bigfrit 03-17-2008, 07:08 PM Incredible sofar, and who knows what is coming... and we all know the famous tamiya kit, and I hope you'll find solutions to all it's flaws! good diggin and fragging fastdupree 03-17-2008, 07:42 PM One of my favorite Ferraris and off to a lovely start. I will also check in on this F40. http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee34/fastdupree/5Cars.jpg jmwallac 03-17-2008, 09:21 PM http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0028.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0030.jpg Dayumn...that's a model in itself! Can't wait to see more. thadude 03-18-2008, 04:08 AM The start looks awsome! ;) What did you use for the interior to get the rough look if i may ask? ??:grinno::grinno: gionc 03-18-2008, 04:24 AM :popcorn::popcorn::naughty::naughty::naug hty: godfather23 03-18-2008, 06:20 AM Very ambitious project, once again. What do you use for the dashboard?? Interesting technique it seems! robrex 03-18-2008, 08:13 AM Thanks for all the comments! What did you use for the interior to get the rough look if i may ask? ??:grinno::grinno: What do you use for the dashboard?? Interesting technique it seems! Sorry, I use Micro balloons. It's a model railroad product that they use for replicating snow in dioramas. Initially I mixed it with the paint and sprayed it on but recently I have used a different technique. Spray the part then sprinkle the micro balloons onto the wet paint (just like flocking). Then knock off the excess and re-spray the part in the desired colour. The photo's show the effect as quite grainy and rough but it real life it is very soft and fine. Here's the finished effect mixed with the paint for comparison http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/360%20Challenge%20Stradale/dash.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0048.jpg kenyap83 03-18-2008, 01:48 PM Amazing details man!:ylsuper: This will be one intersting thread to follow up. So, keep it coming! Captain Mark 03-20-2008, 07:36 AM Mate, you so should be working for Tamiya... Fantastic as always! robrex 03-23-2008, 01:40 AM Not much in the way of step by step progress. But here's a picture of the engine at the moment. Lots still to do... http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0047a.jpg I made replacement turbos to replace the awful kit pieces.. they still look ordinary in these photo's but you can see how small they are and once on the kit should look the business http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0043a.jpg I've also started on the wheels by machining the centre out from the kit wheels and then made resin copies http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0031.jpg The original wheels are 17" but I prefer the look of bigger wheels on scale models so I've stepped the machined rims to make them look slightly bigger without affecting the ride height or changing tyres. They aren't that much bigger but improves the look don't you think? http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0034.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0036.jpg More soon.... klutz_100 03-23-2008, 03:13 AM :eek2: Those turbos just blew my socks off!! :) Joe Blyth 03-23-2008, 04:45 PM Wow, excellent work. Can you go into more detail about how you made the turbos? thadude 03-23-2008, 05:08 PM lovly work on the engine!:D And thnx for awnsering my question :) slk320 03-23-2008, 09:34 PM Abolutely beautiful! kenyap83 03-24-2008, 08:02 AM Immpressive detail engine. Decs0105 03-24-2008, 02:21 PM awesome work, man I missed your progress threads :licka: robrex 05-03-2008, 03:53 AM Here is a quick update. I mentioned earlier that I am making new wheels so here is the progress. First I made resin copies of the wheel centres http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0031.jpg To make the machined rims I decided to do them in two pieces, the actual rim and the section which bolts to the centre. The reason for doing it this way is 1st, it made it easier to mill the bolt holes and 2nd, I can adjust the offset when I'm finishing the model to get a nice fit. Here you can see the 3 pieces and then almost completed pictures (I still need to find bolt heads to use) http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0057.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0056.jpg More updates soon. klutz_100 05-03-2008, 04:41 AM Lovely job, Rob! How about making your own bolt heads? :) robrex 05-03-2008, 07:01 AM Before I started on the paint I needed to fix a few problems with the kit. The first is the air inlet next to the side windows http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0038a.jpg The kit simply has this section added to the window and asks you to paint it red. On the actual car this part is shaped to direct cool air into the engine. I forgot to take a picture of the glass in the kit but to fix the model I made a template of the shape and then used putty to form the intake http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0049.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0054.jpg I then sanded the groove and after a bit of work it looks OK http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0063.jpg Thanks for watching rockinanko 05-03-2008, 09:46 AM i can only say for those who has machining assessibility / capability, you do have a absolute advantage over us (the plastic builders). i hope for all those precision works you've made into this build, will shine out better than those who uses only plastic. let's see what you can do on the completion. good luck! marc SGP robrex 05-04-2008, 04:56 PM Zero Rosso Corsa basecoat applied. Clear coat to follow soon. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0039a.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0061.jpg I've also done a bit more on the rest of the kit http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0051.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0059.jpg Thanks for looking druid_99 05-04-2008, 09:55 PM Good job there. Great job  MidMazar 05-08-2008, 08:47 PM Brilliant work, can't wait to start mine. Everything looks flawless. Ralphymeyer 05-09-2008, 10:48 AM like what you had done with the window, I had the same problem but was not brave enough to dice it up.... gionc 05-17-2008, 03:14 AM Rob: everything is just phenomenal, from the interiors, to the rims and body mods: fantastic. wilchan 05-19-2008, 06:55 PM Wow, this is excellent.. btw, what liquid plastic did you use to do that spark plug wire 'plastic tube' like cover? I remember you mention it somewhere before. Cheers, -- william robrex 05-22-2008, 02:04 AM Wow, this is excellent.. btw, what liquid plastic did you use to do that spark plug wire 'plastic tube' like cover? I remember you mention it somewhere before. Cheers, -- william William, Here's the link to my 312T build which shows the Plasti-dip in use. It's great stuff! http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=4652077&postcount=51 Thanks for all the comments, I'll try to get some more progress posted very soon! SeanyG 08-01-2008, 06:02 PM hey Rob, so is Call of Duty 4 keeping you busy still or have you been able to get back to this beauty yet? ;-) robrex 08-01-2008, 09:57 PM hey Rob, so is Call of Duty 4 keeping you busy still or have you been able to get back to this beauty yet? ;-) Sorry Sean...I have lost my modeling mojo! :crying: I can't even slap a box stock kit together without making a mess of it. The F40 is in the to-finish pile :runaround: I'm also crap at Call of Duty 4 but that doesn't seem to stop me turning the PS3 on all the time :loser: robrex 08-02-2008, 02:05 AM I did however paint it. Zero Rosso Corsa http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0064.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0066.jpg gionc 08-02-2008, 03:19 AM ...I'm also crap at Call of Duty 4 but that doesn't seem to stop me turning the PS3 on all the time :loser: That's the reason since I didn't purchased GT5/PS3 yet: I'm more than sure that my workshop would to remain close for an year or so... Great job Rob on the body, but I'm still in awe with those rims and neat details on the V8. Super! 360spider 09-24-2008, 09:24 AM Don't know how I missed this thread and I would like to apologize for bringing it back, but daym! Great work Rob - any chance you have more progress to show on this one? Terrific detail work and beautiful paint! robrex 06-01-2009, 08:17 PM OK, I have done a bit more Bodywork almost done. I just need to finish the working side windows http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0276.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0277.jpg And here is the rolling chassis http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0272.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0273.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0275.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20F40/DSCF0274.jpg I'll be back soon with more progress 360spider 06-01-2009, 10:47 PM Wow, awesome! having just complete one of these, I know exactly what it takes to make one look like that. Did you do anything to the windshield? It looks like a really clean install, mine had that stupid edge at the top... robrex 06-02-2009, 12:39 AM Wow, awesome! having just complete one of these, I know exactly what it takes to make one look like that. Did you do anything to the windshield? It looks like a really clean install, mine had that stupid edge at the top... Thanks Alex. For the windshield I just ran a flat black paint marker along the side of the clear plastic. It seems to do the job of reducing the amount of reflection off the edge. klutz_100 06-02-2009, 02:55 AM Looks great  Did I read that right?! Working windows?!?! jano11 06-02-2009, 05:35 AM  Splendid! godfather23 06-02-2009, 04:34 PM Great work. The paint looks spot on. A Ferrari in red is just the pure pony. The rolling chassis is very promising. The seats are outstanding. Nothing to add. Basta. You seem to manage to squeeze out a couple of WIP´s at the time. And I wonder...
