Which side is considered the rear? Side with transmission or side with fans?

You didnt say which model of Dodge you have, or what kind of a car. Most always however, the 'front' of the engine is where the belts are, to drive the accessories; alternator, water pump, a.c. compressor. The 'rear' of the engine would be where it bolts to the transmission. Normally the #1 cylinder and #1 spark plug means the one closest to the 'front'.
I dont recall what they called the end of the VW beetle engines that faced the back end of the car, that might be the exception.
