Camry '93 -Removing rear brake light assemblykenfran55 03-15-2008, 12:38 AM Hi After 10 years (amazingly) I have had my first rear brake light blow - right hand side- and need to repalce it I have taken the two side screws off the assembly that are exposed when the boot (trunk) is opened. These are ones that are not in the boot but on the side of the assembly on the boot edge. The assembly is loose on the left side where the screws have been removed but being held tight by the right side of the assembly that is flush with car where the indicator is. The question do I just pull the assembly (which I am not game to do in case I snap something or are there other screws I need to loosen. Inside the boot, right hand side, there are two nuts that I have undone as they seem to be in the right position but despite light tapping on the bolt no movement. I have used the manual but it was not much help help welcome. It seems simple but the cost to replace the assembly if I make a rash move!! Ken RIP 03-15-2008, 02:55 AM According to this link, it's two screws and pull outboard. I changed one on my daughters 94 a couple years ago. I remember experiencing exactly what you are seeing. I recall prying the right side outboard with a screwdriver, putting a small crack in it in the process, but, it came out. If I recall correctly the right side is secured by one or two metal prongs (see fig 13 near the guys thumb) that squeeze into rubber mounts. These mounts are the force you have to overcome to get it out. Try prying with a putty knife or similar. http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/13/f2/b1/0900823d8013f2b1/repairInfoPages.htm Look at figures 11,12,13,14. Brian R. 03-15-2008, 10:54 AM After you have removed the screws, and the assembly is loose, just whang it with the heel of your hand on the inboard side toward the outside of the car. If you pry it with a screwdriver, tape the tip well to prevent damage to plastic and/or paint. Mike Gerber 03-15-2008, 01:25 PM I had this same problem the first time I had to remove that assembly on my 94 Camry. Do what Brian said tapping it with your hand, on the inboard side toward the outboard side. It should eventually come out. Just a tip. When mine finally came out I applied some grease to those 2 prongs and holes before I put the assembly back in. Hopefully that will make it easier to remove the next time it has to come out. Mike kenfran55 03-25-2008, 02:34 AM Thanks for the advice. I managed to get the assembly off. I hit the two metal bolts coming throught the rear into the boot but realised after a while theywere not for the light assembly. In the end, with a deep breath and hoping the assembly would not crack I used a screw driver to pry the assembly off and it came away. There were two lugs holding it in and stiff as they had never been off before. Ken vBulletin®, Copyright ©2010, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
