View Full Version : WIP - Customer's '40 Ford Ratrod Pickup WIP - Customer's '40 Ford Ratrod Pickup tigeraid 02-18-2008, 06:10 PM We're not sure on the final result yet, but it's inspired by ratrod pickups like this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2305/2212987082_016199976d.jpg?v=0 He's in the middle of building one himself, so he's looking to the 1/24 scale version for inspiration. I'm using a Monogram '40 Ford Hot Rod Pickup kit. It sits nearly stock, and the cab is stock, so lots of work is required. Fenders had to be removed, of course: http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip1.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip2.jpg Here's how it sits stock. The cab needs to be chopped, and I'm going to bring the front axle up to lower the front end. Then I'll sit it back together and see if I need to channel it or not. The frame rails already sweep upward at the front and back, so I'm not sure if Z'ing the frame will work well here. Any suggestions? http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip3.jpg My first chop, successful! I cut a bunch out of the A pillars first, then lowered it down to mark and cut the C pillars. Then I sliced the roof in two so they'd line back up again, leaving the small gap, which I filled with strip styrene. http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip5.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip6.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip7.jpg rod_k2 02-19-2008, 08:35 AM Holy sh!t! I never heard about those rat rod pickups! Will it sit as low as that pickup in the pikshurr? rsxse240 02-19-2008, 09:44 AM Looks great John. you picked a really good kit to do the rat rod with too. Doesn't it already have a flathead v-8? If you want that thing LOOOOOOOOW, you could "Z" the frame more than what it is oob, the rear end will definitely need something done about elevation issues. the top looks great so far, I can't wait to see it all done! tigeraid 02-19-2008, 02:03 PM My customer is running a 327 Chevy with an old style Cadillac air cleaner (which I think/hope comes in that AMT '49 Merc kit?) Turbokid15 02-19-2008, 05:07 PM What in the hell is wrong with peeps today you dont put a cheby in a ford Ferrari TR 02-27-2008, 04:21 PM Coolness. you need to get the cab channeled on the frame. quadzero 02-28-2008, 04:53 PM Interesting project for sure, looking forward to more of this. tigeraid 03-11-2008, 10:18 PM Alrighty then... Finished the rough layout of the truck. Holy crap did I ever do a lot of cutting and gluing. :icon16: All of the modifications are made here are the same ones rodders usually make to these beasts. The cab and the box were both channeled, with the lower box "mounts" removed completely. I haven't put a floor in the cab yet. http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip9.jpg The spring mounts were both raised, to lower the car. The rear-most crossmember, which mounts the rear springs, was moved forward about... 5 scale inches. About 6-7 scale inches was removed from the rear of the box, converting it to a short box. The cab was moved back slightly. http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip11.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip13.jpg THEN the front crossmember holding the front axle was moved all the way to the front of the framerails, and here we sit. The car will have wide white slicks on the back, so it'll have a bit more rake to the stance, but otherwise that's how she'll sit. I MAY cut some more out of the back of the box, though. http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip14.jpg Ferrari TR 03-13-2008, 05:28 PM The box seems long. Most i've seen are about as long as the cab with the axle in the center. I'm loving this so far. tigeraid 03-16-2008, 06:19 PM Alright, dammit, the layout is now complete FOR REAL. :p Box is bobbed another four scale inches or so, and the frame shortened as well. Bed was shortened and laid inside roughly, it will be taken out and cleaned up and painted as wood anyway. Got the stance roughly right by substituting cheater slicks, and tossed on the Moon wheels for now, just to get the stance right--the customer is still choosing his wheel and tire combo. Also mocked up the engine roughly, not sure on the exhaust yet anyway. Installed the tailgate and had to extend the skirts with sheet styrene behind the rear tires as well. Now I can actually get to WORK. :icon16: http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip15.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip16.jpg thadude 03-17-2008, 04:15 AM wow, cant wait to see how this turns out :) Ferrari TR 03-17-2008, 02:23 PM Nice! really ratty... tigeraid 03-27-2008, 08:43 PM Got a wood bed with stainless slats put together and mocked up (flat tan base, drybrushed rust brown), and extended the bottom skirts of the box to match the height of the rocker panels on the cab. Layout's pretty much done now, just need to assemble the interior and start painting. http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip17.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip18.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip19.jpg quadzero 04-13-2008, 04:22 AM I love the rims. Can you post a close up pic of how you did the wood bed? tigeraid 04-13-2008, 12:38 PM I love the rims. Can you post a close up pic of how you did the wood bed? Well unfortunately those wheels and tires aren't being used heh... Customer's preference. I'll post a pic of the bed when it's done and clearcoated, but it's basically just flat styrene painted like I did the woodgrain on the station wagons... flat interior tan brushed on thick, with rust brown dry brushed over top. Slats are just painted silver styrene. primera man 04-15-2008, 05:23 PM Coming along nicely flatlandtacoma 04-26-2008, 05:22 PM Looks great so far! Any updates on this? tigeraid 04-27-2008, 01:57 PM sitting here collecting dust while the customer procrastinates on the body colour and wheel/tire combo. brady_381need72c10 05-10-2008, 03:42 PM no pics!!! tigeraid 05-10-2008, 05:26 PM ya, I know, my site's down. I'm dealing with it. tigeraid 06-29-2008, 09:40 PM Got the paint laid, it's a light tan interior colour, with clearcoat. Engine is currently only mounted on the transmission, but needed to mock it up. http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip20.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip21.jpg pstreet 08-13-2008, 09:27 PM are those doors functional, or did you carve the panel lines deeper? Mikke 09-04-2008, 03:48 AM are those doors functional, or did you carve the panel lines deeper? The kit has functional doors, and you can also open and close the side windows. tigeraid 09-04-2008, 07:28 AM woops, I coulda sworn I posted a reply to this a while ago, I guess the posting timed out or something... But ya like he said, the doors are separate, but I've glued them into place anyway, because a) there's very little detail to see in such a small cockpit and b) with such a severe chop and channel, there's virtually nowhere left to mount a hinge, and I had to remove the stock hinges! tigeraid 10-15-2008, 08:34 PM Engine detailed and mounted, headers installed (thanks to M1CRO from SPC!) ... Moving on to steering linkage and the '32 Ford grille. Oh, and an ignition coil. http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip23.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip24.jpg tigeraid 11-27-2008, 08:27 PM Grille, rad and frame extensions in place... working on the headlights now. http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip25.jpg http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/gallery/glh%20ratrod%20pickup/glh_ratpickup_wip26.jpg willdecletjr 11-29-2008, 12:35 PM very nice.
