alright i my friend has a 12in type R that he was going to make a box for but never got around to it. now he wants to sell it for like 60 bucks, it seems to be in fine condition. if i buy it i wanted to go ported but i wasn't sure what size to make it or even what amp to use with it, could anyone point me in the right direction for these? and he said it it 500w rms and 1500w peak, if this is true would i need a new alternator or anything?

go to alpines site and find it in the product section. There should be a download with all the specs and box size recommendations. A 500 watt amp will not require a bigger alternatoer.

a belive the alpine recommends 1.85 cf for the 12" tuned in around 30-34 hertz and for the type i woul do 750 watts a peaice ( they can handle 1k rms daily)

alright i found the dimensions on the alpine website like you said but i was confused on two things. (1) 18''X13.5''X16.5'' and then it went on to the vent length as 22.75''. but how can the vent not fit in the box??? and (2) how would i tune the the hertz?

the vent is "folded" inside the box

ooo ok the folded vent make perfect sense now, thanks a ton. but one last thing (for now) i still have a stock head unit, will that affect the subs preformance or the quality that i could get out of it if i had a good head unit?

It'll be a hell of a lot easier to hook up with an aftermarket headunit.

you will either have to use an amp that has high level inputs or use a line level adapter

ok i think i have 1 last thought and im not really sure about it so correct me if im wrong. so the type r's are dual voice coil and their 4ohms, so does that mean i can from +to+ and -to- and then to the amp and it will be 2ohms, and if my amp was 1ohm stable i could do the exact same thing to a seccond type r and wire them together and they will be 1ohm? i think......

that's exactly right .... 2 4 ohm DVC subs with all 4 voice coils wired in parallel will yield a 1 ohm load.

the shop that's selling that amp is pretty stupid (car audio wise), so you might want to be careful.

look for a hifonics bx1206d that should be a good match for a type R

it is best not to go over 20 inches of port
say your building a box for 1 12 i would go with 2-2.5 cubes with 30sqin tuned to 32hz but thats just me
