AF Group Build- Air Cooled!

Now that Tang assures us that the Ferrari 60th (61st?) anniversary group build is being wrapped up, it's time for the next one. :grinyes:

Some of us have been kicking around this idea for weeks now, and it seems just too cool not to do it as a group build- Aircooled Engines. :sunglasse Anything with an aircooled powerplant, any era, any scale. As always, it's not a contest- build along for fun! Due date, say a year or so from now- spring 2009ish. :dunno: Porsches, VWs, early classics, etc. (even V-twins!). Full engine or curbside :uhoh:, your choice- but as this is an engine theme, we'll certainly hope to see lots of engines!

Here are some great aircooled kits- (I know this isn't all so if you can think of more, name them!)

Tamiya:
Citroen 2CV
Fiat 500/695
Porsche 959
VW Beetle '66
VW Kharman Ghia
Does the 956 (aircooled cylinders, but watercooled heads) count as aircooled? You decide!

Fujimi:
Porsche 356 (many to choose)
Porsche 911 (even more to choose)

Hasegawa:
VW Bus/Van (curbside, but cool)

So show us your boxers!! http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/images/smilies/box20.gif (No, not those boxers! :uhoh: )

And no Ferrari's! :grinno: :evillol:

Don't forget that IMSA versions of the 962 were fully aircooled until IMSA relented in '88 and let the Group C 962 engine in.

Didn't actually know that. :sly: But there's also the Fujimi 917, isn't there?

And we shouldn't overlook the Gunze BMW Isetta....

I'm in as well. Choosing which car will be difficult though, got all Tamiya kits you mentioned except the 2CV...

Maybe this will help me over my buildersbreak...
Anyway, good luck setting it up!

Maybe as an idea, our own part of the forum where we place all our WIP and the instructions about the groupbuild in a sticky there?

Fantastic, Andy.
I'll do something: the plan would be a 961 full detail (should mount a 956 engine so like you said air cooled cylinders and water cooled heads), another couple of great build I planned wrom a whyle are the Rothmans 911 SC group4 (rallye kind, tarmac version) and obviously the Isetta?

Was the Messershmitt cub aircooled? Ok time to introduce the Aircooled gag: since here at AF we have also an aircrat/armour section.... there http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1807
I'm sure I'll find something for the Aircooled theme, something with wings, and not Red Bull... ;)

I for one will be looking forward to participating in this group build. My plan will be to do to the Porsche 961 from Le Mans 1987.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/326200961_7711-med.jpg

I'll be using a combination of Tamiya's 959,

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/326200a0_1.jpg

and the 961 kit.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/32620024071.jpg

And I'll be using the Studio 27 decal sheet for the Rothman's car

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/326200Untitled_Photo37.jpg

I plan on starting on this later this week. And Im looking forward to seeing others subjects.

Sure- I expect I'll incorporate my 993 as well. Hopefully I'll manage some thing else, as well.

What about motorcycles? Are they allowed?

Aircooled ones, definitely!

Can I build a VW bug with a smallblock in it?

I suppose that's your decision. It's not a contest so I'm not expecting that we'll be doing many this is/this isn't judgments. Do you believe a smallblock belongs in with aircooled engines?

My plan will be to do to the Porsche 961 from Le Mans 1987.

 I suspect that yours may not be the only 961.

I'm also thinking of doing Tamiya's 959 (as a 959). Together with the 993, I figure they represent the ultimate evolution of the production aircooled engine. (Or, the ultimate evolution of the VW Beetle.... )

Maybe as an idea, our own part of the forum where we place all our WIP and the instructions about the groupbuild in a sticky there?

Extra temporary forums are rather difficult to arrange. But there's really no reason we can't use this thread for that purpose. Instructions will likely be kept to a minimum (Build something aircooled! Have fun!), I can add everyone's build threads to the first post, and we can have related discussions here.

All but the 2CV? That does make it tough to decide, doesn't it? (But don't discount the 2CV- it's another great little full detail kit!) Fujimi's Enthu Porsches make it even harder. :uhoh: They seem like an all out celebration of aircooled coolness. (And many are easily available again! :jump3: )

Welcome to AF!

This one? http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/list/24car/img/24175.jpeg Yes, the 993 GT2 was in fact aircooled. The 993 was the last aircooled (and some might say, last true) 911- so for our purposes, it definitely qualifies.

Great idea for a group build :D

I have a half-built Gunze Sangyo 1:24 VW Karmann Ghia that I started ages ago, but that's a kerbside, so not the best for this group build, and as I already have too many kits, I'll have to build something that I already have. I'm not feeling anywhere near brave enough yet to attempt Fujimi's 356 speedster, so that leaves Revell's 1:16 early Beetle :) :smokin: (also have the matching early KG coupe, but sadly that's missing the headlight lenses).

The tricky question though, is do I build it as the oval / split window saloon that it is moulded as, or do I convert it into a Karmann cabrio? :naughty:

Well, I just joined a few weeks ago, so this will be my first build on here, but I'm in!:grinyes:

I'll be building a Baja bug from the Tamiya '66 kit. I'll start a thread as soon as I have something worth showing.

I always seem to improve my chances of actually FINISHING a kit if I have someone building along with me, so this site should get me going after an eight year hiatus from building (2 young daughters will do that you know).

I'm very excited about this.:naughty:

G'day everyone,

i've been kicking around these forums for about 12months now just watching all these amazing builds go on and i watched the 60th fez build with great interest (in the middle of building an enzo... that was started more then a year ago...). This GB is what i need i think to get me motivated enough to finally build my 356B/C 2000GS Carrera Cabriolet.
I look forward to being involved in this aslong as you guys will have me.

Welcome to AF! We'll certainly have you, as long as your willing to participate.

Isn't that a terrific kit? One just found it's way into my stash, and it's simply amazing- the detail almost rivals Tamiya's Enzo. It would make a terrific addition.

TERRIFIC!

Really I can't understand where those "old school" engineers gone: and note: the 356 EM series is way better than any other EM kit to me, 911 and ponys included: I bought my first few days ago but I guess much other will follow.

Meanwhyle I taken my decision, or better fixed my AC priorities:

-1st Isetta, may be I'll do a (light) de-conversion to the original Iso Rivolta Isetta, sold later to BMW under license, with a little "plus":

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/isetta.jpg

-2nd I'm studying hard, collecting refs and several books about the 917, since I hasn't one, obviously with all those tons of refs I'm very tempted to do the whole spaceframe, and for my first 917 a cool livery would be the following (thanks to Nic for the advice, I'm sure we talk about over our mails)

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/749059.jpg

I love this car, I forgot all my dear ferraris LOL

A third one if I got time would be a 356, probably spider (I seen somewhere a speedster version, without windscreen... fantastic..), once a time the 356 EM kit is superb, may be he'll be hard to put togheter but speaking of details....fantastic.

The Porsche 959 was actually aircooled with watercooled heads. But I think that counts. And Tamiya's version was a major pain to build (not typical Tamiya fitment anyway) Unfortunately I have no more aircooled kits in my stash!

Just build! Place 'Air Cooled GB' in your thread title, and build an aircooled model. Not alot have been started yet, but a few more 356s should be coming along shortly.

993 GT2? The GT1 was neither aircooled nor a 993.

I'll find something to build. Been eyeing the 993 GT2 Club sport for a while.
I built the tamiya GT1 which was based (sort of) on the 993 but as I just found out was water cooled. The original article I found before my first post said it was aircooled. :) Guess they were wrong LOL!

How much longer is this group build going to last? I noticed that the deadline for the finish has come and gone. Are we still taking in new entries or are we waiting for the next build? I have a couple of subjects out of which I could add and start building, but I havent entered because of the time frame ending. If we will be starting a new one soon then I can wait for the next build.

I was just wondering.

Thanks
