I am trying to replace headlamp units on grand cherokee (not the bulb) but I can not get the old headlight unit out. Do I need to remove the turning signal or is there a special tool to release the unit?

Yeah, you have to remove the turn signal housing.

You can go to (autozone.com) click on the (vehicle repair guides) follow the links. The information shows how to remove it.
