What kind of car are you getting? If you want to be heard from a block away, go to your local bestbuy and ask for the cheap insignia subwoofers that they sell there, and wire them up to a decent amp. It will sound absolutely horrible, but it'll be somewhat loud...

getting LOUD bass AND a nice sounding system is gonna cost you. If $600 is the max you have to spend, you are gonna have to go bargain hunting.

If you assume that the stock speakers on the car don't horribly suck completely, you can get by for now with just a new head unit and the subs. For the subs you'll need the actual speakers, a box, an amp, and some wiring. If you can go online and use a credit card to buy the stuff, woofersetc.com has some good deals on stuff you can go for to get the most bang for your buck. Depending on your woodskills you could save a few bucks by making your own box, this is gona help your subs sound the best. Next you need to figure out how much sound you want. From my experience, if you go for ~300 RMS thats more than enough for the subs to give you a nice bump, and can be heard reasonably far away if you want.

For now, since you're on the budget I'd reccomend you go for 1 12 inch sub for now, 2 subs looks cool and all, but it's pricier generally.

So here's my sample system for you, based on bass and leaving the headunit out and up to you:

Sub: 1 12 inch Audiospawn:

^ Not known for sound quality, but cheap bass.

Amp: http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=4881
^ Profile is good for the price.

Wiring: Nothing fancy here good ol 4ga:

$30 for a box

That gives you a total of 240$ish for the sub, amp, wiring, and box, leaving you with about $200 to spend on a decent headunit. Of course installing is always extra...

Check out this thread its got lots of good starter info, and some tips on box building. Subs generally have specific volumes that they need. Only rarely do you find a prefab box which fits them perfectly. If you dont get a properly sized box, they sound pretty bad.

The idea is that once you get a budget you start adding more/better components. Although with subs if you're going to go for 2, get 2 of the exact same model, otherwise it's going to sound like suck ;-)

Also cars that were originally more expensive tend to have better sound deadening so when you throw the subs in, everything wont rattle to hell.

So your speaker size for the doors and rear deck are both 6x8.
