Odometer failurec140flyer 02-08-2008, 09:18 PM Tonight my '96 Geo Metro reached 70,000 miles! Unfortunately the odometer stopped right there! It won't make it over the hump. Anyone else had this problem at a "milestone" mileage? Thanks, Larry DieInterim 02-09-2008, 10:28 AM Hello, That milage your auto just reached is quite low compared to its age. I suspect that there is some flashing or other debris that could be causing gear hop. If you can hear a click and see the odometer move at the same time as the click, then you certainly have the aforementioned. Now, if you are a attemptive soul you can give it a go yourself, yor could replace it, or you can locate a speedo repair shop and get it repaired. Look for signs of previous work..possible milage rollback. flashlight 02-16-2008, 05:48 AM Your speedometer cable could have possibly come loose. That cable not only runs the speedometer but also the odometer. I had the same problem while I was out on a hunting trip. There is a clip that connects the cable to the back of the dashboard. The clip is located under the dash of course not in a convienant place. You can't look up under the dash and see it. You can only find it by feel which really sucks. The easiest way to get to it is to lie on your back and reach under the dash board. And reconnect it. c140flyer 02-16-2008, 02:49 PM Thanks for your input guys. I'm pretty sure it's not the cable because the trip odometer works. I think Die Interim is right. There is probably something causing "gear hop''. This is a unit I bought on Ebay w/ 66,500 miles on it. I waited for my car to get there and swapped it out because it has the trip odometer and tach. The tach appears to be set up for the 4 cylinder engine and I have a 3, so this gives me incentive to modify the tach sensor while I fix the gear problem!
