slow shifting into reverse

On my one 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the transmission has been sluggish going into reverse. Whether you shift it from park, neutral, drive, or gear 2 into reverse, it takes a good second to 2 seconds to shift into reverse. However, if I shift from gear 1 to reverse, it shifts in quickly and perfectly. There is sometimes when I first shift into reverse from any gear except gear 1 that if i hit the gas too hard, the tranny makes this loud whining and then it shifts into reverse. I do not have a problem with normal shifting while driving. The transmission always shifts smooth and accurately. Someone did mention that I might need a band adjustment. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Have you at least checked the fluid level? Down a single qt can cause this sort of problem. Also, Change your fluid/filter every 60,000 mi.
Let us know how things work out.

I did check the fluid and it is at proper levels. However, there are tiny air bubbles on the dipstick. The fluid doesn't smell burnt, but I am afraid to flush the tranny because I don't think it has ever been changed and the Jeep has 154,000 miles on it. Do you think it would be a good idea to flush the tranny since it has never been done?

I would, but this is your call. Trans fluid is oil. Oil viscosity breaks down over time.

Well, I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
