Another turn signal problem

I've read quite a few posts that describe an intermitent problem with turn signals on Grand Cherokees, but none were exactly like my issue. My right turn signal has always worked fine. The left will rarely come on at all without some help. If i turn it on (not working), then turn on the hazards (work perfectly), then turn the hazards off, the left signal will stay on about a third of the time. It seems to work a little better in warm weather. The signal will work more often if i have been driving for awhile (at least 30 mins), especially when its cold out. Took it to a mechanic and he couldn't find the problem. Told me to take it to a Jeep dealer. Heard about switch modulators in the steering column, clocksprings, etc. Need Help!

Couple of questions: Did you change the flasher? Are the turn signal bulbs working? If those are all ok, you might have a bad turn signal switch (the extra load from the 4way might be giving you an arc connection instead of a solid mechanical one. If you have a drivers airbag, BE SURE YOU FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON DISABLING IT BEFORE MESSING WITH THE SWITCH! It really hurts to have one go off in your face!!!

You did not include the vehicle year: on smoe later models, the turn signal flasher is combined with the regular one. It is located on the right side of, and above the steering column on the dash re-enforcement bar. Factory ones are usually blue.

It is a 2002. Your idea is one i haven't heard yet. Also had someone mention the multifunction switch. On a few occasions when i absolutely had to get the signal on (in a city) and the hazard light trick didn't work, a whack on the bottom of the dash just above the hood release made it come on (left it turned on without it working, gave it a whack, it turned on). The fact that would make it work really makes wonder what the heck it is. Doubt it would be the multifunction switch because of this. Not sure about the turn signal switch. I'll check that out.

Benny...I am going to have to move your thread to the Grand Cherokee portion of the forum.

banging on the underside of the dash suggests multifunction switch. It's an easier repair than a turn signal switch and if it has a lot of miles on it, it's not an unreasonable investment even if it's not the problem... good luck,
