Mechanic replaced the front wheel bearings on 1995 4WD Isuzu Rodeo. Immediately after replacing the bearings when the front wheel drive is engaged there is an intermediate loud popping sound coming from the right front wheel. Sounds like a gear slipping. Also, doesn’t disengage properly when going back to 2WD. Mechanic says it is nothing he did that caused the problem. Can anyone give me suggestions? Thanks!

Most likely the snap ring came off the end of the axle. They would have removed that to replace the bearings. Reach under the front end and grab the cv joint that goes into the steering knuckle. See if you can move it in and out. If you can the snap ring has come off.

Thanks Gizmo42. The snap ring is in place, but there is endplay in the axle on the right side, the side that slips, while there isn't any endplay on the left side. I appreciate your response.

Take it back.
Thanks FL 3.2L,
I now have my situation with the mechanic in arbitration. I’m trying to gather as much information as possible about what could cause the problem before the trial date. The strange thing is that I have offered to take the Rodeo to another mechanic and if it wasn’t something he did that caused it, I would pay for the repair. Likewise, if it was something he caused, then he would pay for the repair. He refuses.
Thanks for your response.
