Display cases?!

Hey all. I have been looking for some display cases for my builds as they are getting ruined by dust. I know that there are a lot of types out there, but I wanted to know what you guys prefer. I like the looks of the mirrored based ones a lot. What I don't like are ones that are cheap looking and have beveled edges on the clear acrylic. Can you please let me know what brand or type you have been successful in finding? And of course, can you post pics please?

Thanks for the time,
Jon

I have a display cabinet I keep my models in, works really well.

Display cases are fine, but you'll soon tire of having to buy a new one every time you finish a model.

you could build one that holds 3 or 4+ models in one?

with a glass/perspec mirror as a base?

This is what I use for display cases. I buy them at Hobby Lobby. They retail at 16.99, but I buy them when they have display cases & shadow boxes 50% off. I can get 4 Nascar models into each case, and I have 6 cases.

Walk into any Walmart in the US and in their toy department you can find wicked cheap display cases ($5.50 or so?). They are for 1/24 scale models, have a black base and clear top. You can stack many on top of one another:

Unfortunately, WalMart has discontinued selling models & related items in their stores, so you cant get those cases there anymore.

Really? Must admit I hadn't looked in a while. That's a shame!

Oh good...at least Tower has them at a reasonable price:

These are slightly different as the ones at Walmart were AMT/ERTL brand. But it's a base with a top so it functions the same!

I can make these clear acrylic stands at a reasonable price. If anyone is interested, please send me a private message.

They look fantastic, but how do they stop the dust?

They don't. But they look fantastic!:iceslolan

They're best for in-cabinet display. Or for temporary exhibits, like shows.

Hey Mike,

I have a ton of those cases both in 1/24 and 1/18, but I bought them at a local KB Toy Outlet. They are made by Polyfect Toys and have a horrible looking Ferrari F40 on the box. I recently bought a 1/12 Tamiya display case on sale at Tamiyausa.com for only $40. Retail is like $145 or something crazy like that. It's a very good quality case. http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=73002

Thanks for all of the replies all. I agree with Ray about one big one. I have seen a few how to's on building them - looks pretty easy IMO. Has anyone gone the route of a quality oak built case/cabinet as well? What does yours look like Ray?

Didymus - you make that with 5 more sides and then we are talking, lol.

For about $60, Ikea offers a nice cabinet about 5 1/2 feet high that, with the addition of some extra (mirror) glass shelves, would make an excellent display case for models. Should keep out the dust, too. It's glass on all sides.

It's called a "Detolf" and it's on their website at http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10011055

I know that stunk, but I was able to pick up lots of stuff cheap.

I got a ton of the Testors Sprays for 1 dollar a piece (avg. $3) and hobby knives.

Didy!!!! that is one awesome way of displaying!!!! very cool!
and the paint on that build is blinding!!!! did you take that shot inside or outside? the only way I can get my builds to really show the shine like that is outside!
Right on man! Great build

I shot it indoors with a Canon SLR using a custom color temperature setting.

Right on man! Great build
True confession time - the Ferrari is a (shame on me) BBR diecast. My built kits are 1/43's, and they don't show off the stands as well.

Thanks for the link Alex. I was already thinking of that route as well. I am curious though about a few things that you may have tried?

Have you made one that was deeper? Meaning more depth to turn the models at more of an angle?

Have you tried a mirrored background or even mirrored shelves?

I saw you mounted it to the wall with the said hinges as well. Do you feel that there is enough to support all of the weight?

I can research all of these options but I was curious if you had thought about these options before? I know all of what I mentioned would cause the weight to go up drastically but I am sure that I could secure it by separating between stud lengths in the walls.
