Opinions req:Timing belts suggestionsofrog21 01-30-2008, 10:56 AM Would help make a decision On a Toyota Tacoma 2001 or a Camry 2002 both hitting 60,000 miles 1. How long is it estimated that a timing belt should last 2. If it breaks does it mess up the engine (Urban myth?) or does it just mean an inconvenient tow? Trying to see if I should be preventive or just let it ride until it happens TIA for any info Flash75 02-02-2008, 05:45 AM According to this Gates chart both your vehicles timing belt replacement intervals are 90k miles. Chart also tells if the engine is an interference engine, (will it harm engine if belt breaks). Your Tacoma has an interference, depends on the engine for the Camry. In any case, break a belt and you call someone to tow the vehicle. Some people wait two times the interval without the belt breaking, others have the belt break shortly after the recommmended change interval.
