Rodeo hits the wall at 4,500rpm! Why?

I've just bought a 1993 Rodeo and the thing is fun to drive.

However, when the revs get to 4,500rpm, it is as though the engine has a kind of lazy rev limiter. When it hits 4,500rpm, it really struggles to go further. It does it quite suddenly as well. If I floor it, it creeps slowly to higher revs. I haven't tried going above 5,000rpm.

Any ideas why it does this?

When is the last time you did a tune up?

Just bought the thing today. Reckon a tuning is in order? I'll look into that.

It also sometimes makes a banging noise when i go into 4,500rpm and above territory.

it could be the timing belt tensor that is banging.
