ok I took my car in today to get an oil change and was told that " the air filter is caked with oil and gas indicating mechanical problems", so I guess what I am asking is, what kind of problems can that be? what do I look for?

Did they CHANGE your filter? You should keep the dirty one so a real mechanic can give you a second opinion. Air filters get oil on them, that's perfectly normal as long as it happens over a long period of time, say 3 months or longer. Put a new air filter in the car and check it once a week or so and see how quickly it gets dirty. Air filters dont usually get gas on them, unless you have some seriously leaky injectors, in which case your car wouldn't run properly, and you would notice. How long has it been since your last oil change? Old oil will smell like gas sometimes.

Just replace the filter and keep checking it.
